Job Description
General Purpose
The City of Idaho Falls is accepting applications for an IT Technician I. This position performs a variety of working level, complex technical duties related to the day-to-day installation and maintenance of City Information Technology systems and operations; including, PC installation and maintenance, with supervision server maintenance, telephone/data communication systems management, and network maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Depending on candidate's experience and qualifications, this position may be hired at a Technician II level.
Essential Functions

Provide an outstanding level of IT customer service to City Departments and consultants both with call-in, email, and on-site support.
Build, deploy, test and maintain Personal Computers (PC), mobile devices, and related hardware and software for all City Departments; installs windows OS software and configures on a domain; reviews PC software and hardware and makes recommendation to supervision on what might be needed.
Assists in maintaining City Server and related equipment and software; adds and removes users from domain, email, and Microsoft 365 Environments; restore from backup user files as needed; with supervision, may be assigned to assist with managing virtual infrastructure using VMware ESX virtual attached to a fiber channel / ISCSI SAN.
Assists in managing and configuring IP phone system; program phone handsets to work with system; replace switches as needed; install/configure Personal Call Manager for users; maintains various systems and phone servers; recommends new equipment purchases.
Provides under supervision, systems and network security and installs security patches.
Trains City users in PC hardware and software and related functions through business-critical applications, networking, PowerPoint presentations and other related activities.
Provide after-hours support when needed for systems maintenance and/or system outages.
Progression from an IT Technician I to and IT Technician II is accomplished through a non-competitive criteria-based promotional process. The incumbent must be employed a minimum of one year as a City of Idaho Falls IT Support Technician I. In addition, the incumbent must meet established work standards, demonstrate the level of competency necessary to independently perform assigned tasks, and meet the minimum qualifications of the IT Support Technician II.
Other duties as assigned by Systems Administrator.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Education and Experience: A. Completion of two (2) years of technical college or a four (4) year degree in computer science, computer programming, or related fields; OR B. two (2) years of progressively responsible experience performing PC desk support of IT duties; OR C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Networking (LAN/VLAN) system management concepts; information system management concepts; hardware configurations and capabilities; operating system fundamentals; data communication concepts; NetWare/Windows Servers systems, PC operating systems, applications and programs, networking documentation procedures; technical writing. Some knowledge of telecommunication equipment technology; system networking procedures and typical maintenance processes; various types of inter-related equipment, specifications and compatibilities; system programming requirements and software contingencies; basic internet functions, such as outlook. Skill in use of computer systems’ architecture and configurations; operation of office equipment including menu driven personal computer systems, printers, photocopying machines, and optical scanners, etc.
Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; make basic decisions where established procedures do not always apply; perform complex analytical functions; keep sensitive information confidential; operate personal computer and apply various program applications related to word processing, spread sheets and presentations; develop effective working governmental administrators, programmers, and system maintenance personnel; effectively manage workplace stress related to time deadlines, work pace demands, shifting priorities, and rapid changes within the information technologies industry; learn new systems as they are deployed.
3. Special Qualifications:
A background check is required with a polygraph.
Knowledge of public safety software and maintenance is preferred.

Work Environment

Incumbent of the position performs in a typical office setting with appropriate climate controls and at times, outside in an automotive/mobile office. Tasks require a variety of physical activities, not generally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, and lifting. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity required. Mental application utilizes memory for attention to details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. At times in an environment of sensitive confidential information. Periodic domestic and international travel required in normal course of job performance.
