Required Qualifications: Applicants must specifically address how they meet these required qualifications to meet the requirements of the position.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including both oral and written communication.
  • State or national interpreter certification (e.g., RID, Texas BEI III, Advanced or above).
  • Bachelor’s degree or any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Ability to work independently without close supervision, as well as work collaboratively as a team member.
  • Ability to relate well to the unique needs of college students who are deaf or hard of hearing, including a desire to work one-on-one with these students to help meet their accessibility needs in their academic environment.
  • Two-year minimum working with deaf and hard-of-hearing students in higher education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of WhenToWork software.
  • Knowledge of the Accessible Information Management (AIM) database.
  • Student-centered.

The Interpreter Coordinator position works with students who are deaf or hard of hearing to facilitate access to the educational environment. The Interpreter Coordinator is responsible for collaborating with faculty and staff to improve accessibility and promote an inclusive environment. The Interpreter Coordinator will also attend meetings and professional development opportunities concerning access issues for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

Job Duties
  • Provides advanced notification to faculty regarding accommodations for D/HOH students.
  • Coordinates sign language interpreting and real-time captioning services with contracted vendors.
  • Assists in the development and/or review of office publications, policies, and procedures.
  • Responds and schedules special requests for interpreting and captioning services.
  • Meets with D/HOH students requesting accommodations. This includes obtaining, interpreting, and verifying documentation (e.g., audiogram or Certificate of Deafness) provided by the student. Through an interactive process with the student, evaluates the student’s sign language or captioning needs to determine appropriate accommodations.
  • Respond to emails in a timely fashion.
  • Updates, cleans, and charges laptops used by student worker captionists.
  • Remains updated on research and best practices related to students who are deaf or hard of hearing in higher education. Actively promotes the principles of diversity, equity, access, and inclusion.
  • Serves as a liaison for the accessibility needs and rights of students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Coordinates student worker captionists’ services for HOH students.
  • Provides ongoing service and case management to students who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HOH). This includes direct assistance to monitor the effectiveness of accommodations and individual advocacy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Oversees the student worker captionists’ laptop check-out and check-in process.
  • Screens, hires and supervises student worker captionists and student office assistants.
  • Provides interpreting services for some courses.
  • Coordinates Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) services and the receipt of payments for students who are clients of TWC.
  • Participates in disability outreach and awareness activities.
