Job Description

Job Summary

The Woodshop Coordinator is responsible for the safety and accessibility of the woodshop. This position determines and establishes safety protocols for access to all tools and equipment available for students, TA's and TF's, visiting artists and faculty in studio and film. This position develops intensive training curricula and class-specific instructional sessions in the proper use of power and hand tools. Meets with students one-on-one and in groups to workshop and plan complex, long-term sculpture and design projects in wood and metal, connecting students with a wide variety of advanced technical and conceptual resources; consults with students about construction approaches and materials, and provides support for courses by monitoring and ordering supplies, tools and equipment. Hires and oversees shop assistants for wood and metal shop; trains shop assistants to ensure that students have access to the best available technical and safety instruction. Monitors and performs skilled maintenance of all shop equipment. Work schedule varies depending on the course schedule. Flexible hours required. This is a full-time, 10-month position. This position is responsible for maintaining the quality control required to insure safety for all users.

Position Description

This position:
  • -Determines and establishes safety protocols for access to all tools and equipment available for students, TAs and TFs, visiting artists, staff and faculty in studio and film.
- Develops intensive training curricula and class-specific instructional sessions in the proper use of power and hand tools.
  • -Consults with students about construction approaches and materials, and provides support for courses by monitoring and ordering supplies, tools, and equipment.
  • -Monitors and performs skilled maintenance of all shop equipment.
  • -Meets with students one-on-one and in groups to workshop and plan complex, long-term sculpture and design projects in wood and metal, connecting students with a wide variety of advanced technical and conceptual resources.
  • -Hires and oversees shop assistants for wood and metal shop; trains shop assistants to ensure that students have access to the best available technical and safety instruction.

Work schedule varies on Monitor availability, some flexible hours required. This is a full time position with a 2 month furlough beginning in June returning August 1. This position is responsible for maintaining the quality control required to ensure safety for all users.

Basic Qualifications

  • 2+ years working with students in an academic environment.
  • 3+ years experience working with machine shop safety protocol.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • 3-5 years professional fabrication experience and familiarity with contemporary studio art practice a plus.
  • Bachelor of Arts is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical tools and their use.
  • Ability to work with a diverse audience of varying numbers and experience levels.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required.

Please note: This is a ten-month position, August 1 through May 31, with 2-months seasonal leave.
