Job Description

Nurse III reports directly to the Director of Nursing of Inpatient Services and follows the strategic plans set by the Chief Nurse Executive with broad latitude for independent decision making. Performs clinical and managerial tasks for the 24-hour operation of one or more patient care units. Assists with interviewing with selecting new employees, evaluating and coaching staff, mentoring nursing staff with assessing learning needs of staff members. Demonstrates clinical expertise in caring for population served and in developing performance improvement measures and participates in competency assessments. Coordinates emergency preparedness, safety functions and infection control activities for the unit. Assists with hospital wide training programs. Knowledge of The Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and other accreditation or regulatory requirements. May occasional work as Nurse Administration On-Call and provide Director of Nursing Inpatient Service or Chief Nurse Executive coverage as needed by the organization. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
Essential Job Functions
Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
(25%) Assists in the clinical and administrative management of a 24-hour patient care unit. Participates in interview and selection of applicants for nursing staff positions. Participates in new employee orientation, assessing staff competency and staff development. Evaluates and counsel staff. Coordinates clinical performance improvement activities for staff.
(20%) Expected to assist with Registered Nurse (RN) duties on the floor when occasionally needed, by working on the unit, taking patient assignments as needed to provide adequate staffing. May occasional work weekends and flexibility to work on different shifts as needed (day, evening, and night)
(10%) Communicates effectively with patients, families, staff members and others to meet the mission of the Hospital and to provide information regarding care and treatment for Tuberculosis. Demonstrates clinical expertise in caring for patients with tuberculosis and other diseases and in developing performance improvement measures.
(5%) Demonstrates knowledge of The Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and other accreditation or regulatory requirements.
(5%) Provides staff in-services and conducts staff meetings. Serves on hospital or department committees. Provides or assists with providing care as needed.
(5%) Mentors nursing staff and others to reach peak performance. Teaches and evaluates knowledge of unit staff regarding infection control, safety measures and emergency preparedness.
(5%) Assists with establishing performance improvement monitors for safety, infection control and emergency preparedness. Takes appropriate actions pending outcomes.
(5%) Communicates effectively in written and verbal form. Demonstrates ability to use computer technology. Assists with hospital wide training programs.
(5%) Assumes responsibility for his/her own continuing education and professional development.
(5%) May occasional work as Nurse Administration On-Call and provide Director of Nursing Inpatient Service or Chief Nurse Executive coverage as needed by the organization. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
(10%) Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
Knowledge Skills Abilities
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission, Medicare and state and federal regulations pertaining to health care and accreditation standards and criteria.
  • Advanced knowledge in infection control practices and nosocomial infections.
  • Skill in performing approved techniques to prevent and safely manage aggressive behavior.
  • Ability to provide professional patient care and to teach and supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to use a personal computer, software programs (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, Electronic Health Records), and Internet based databases (i.e., SharePoint, Teams) Ability to read, write, and speak English.
  • Knowledge and skill in caring for individuals with TB, MDR TB and Hansen’s Disease patients and other medical-surgical conditions.
  • Knowledge required to provide age-appropriate care to young adults, adults, and geriatric individuals. Knowledge of human development.
  • Skill in performing CPR.
  • Skill in providing age-appropriate nursing care to young adults, adults, and geriatric patients.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in orally and in writing. Ability to make presentations to groups. Ability to speak English and Spanish and to obtain translation services when needed to be able to communicate with patients in their preferred language.
  • Knowledge of/and ability to apply principles and practices in management, supervision, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Ability to determine required staffing levels and to adjust as needed. Ability to plan and implement competency testing for nursing personnel.
  • Knowledge of group dynamics.
  • Ability to complete prescribed training program to gain work related competencies in the techniques and methods of treatment.
  • Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice, including cultural, social, and economic forces which affect the health of families and communities.
Registration Or Licensure Requirements
Must be licensed as a registered nurse by the State of Texas or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact (Required)

Texas Driver’s License or Texas Identification Card (Required)
Has At Least 5 Years Nursing Experience (Required)
Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (Required)
Master of Science Degree in Nursing, Public Health, Health Administration, or Health Informatics (Preferred).
Additional Information
SALARY NOTE: The posted salary range reflects the minimum and maximum allowable by state law. Any employment offer is contingent upon available budgeted funds. The offered salary will be determined in accordance with budgetary limits and the requirements of HHSC Human Resources Manual Chapter 7.
Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, and HHS OIG list of Excluded Individuals/Entities. Males between the ages of 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service.

Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours.
Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations is required. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, healthcare workers are considered to be at significant risk for acquiring or transmitting hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), and influenza. All of these diseases are vaccine-preventable. As a result, state hospital policy requires employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with individuals. In the event you choose to not be immunized for the influenza virus, you may be required to wear a mask and take other protective measures.
