Job Description

Summary

The Phlebotomist I is responsible for performing standard laboratory venipuncture and capillary collection procedures from assigned inpatients and outpatients, labeling the specimens completely and accurately, and transporting specimens to the appropriate location in the laboratory. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to prioritize workload and develop plans for efficient workflow.
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of staff, nurses and physicians.
  • Basic knowledge of barcode label equipment, basic printers and copiers.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel preferred.
  • Ability to organize tasks and maintain control of work flow.
  • Ability to perform basic calculations such as needed to calculate maximum blood collection.
  • Ability to learn various computer modules and applications (such as Cerner, Pathnet, and Carenet).

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Adheres to the laboratory policy for dress code.
  • Correctly identifies patients and collects appropriate specimens for requested assays and labels specimens completely and accurately.
  • Understands, applies, and supports departmental/hospital policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Participates in quality monitoring and evaluation and implements measures to ensure hospital, DNV, and other quality standards are met.
  • Performs other job functions as assigned or requested.
  • Processes specimens and delivers them to the appropriate location within the lab.
  • Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for self-development and enhancement of professional competency.

Physical Requirements

  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
