Job Description

The Inbound Transportation Manager is responsible for the import operations of one of the United States' 50 largest importers by volume. The responsibilities of this position include ensuring the smooth operation of well over $500M worth of goods per year from our vendors' doors all over the world to our US warehouse network. The position involves the development and execution of strategic inbound routing plans and network load planning. This position manages teams responsible for container shipping and drayage trucking, and is also a support function that works closely with Procurement, Warehouse Operations, suppliers, and our network of freight carriers and forwarders. This person will manage the operational flow of product through these levels of our supply chain, while also supervising a team of ~15 employees, including several direct reports. The success of the position will be measured on service level, expense management including port fee avoidance, internal surveys, and conceptual and analytical problem-solving. Correct execution of this position will result in all freight and inbound costs being managed to the lowest levels possible while maximizing service levels.


Responsibilities

  • Help to resolve issues for high-priority customers, including special import requests
  • Represent company during occasional in-person meetings and conferences, as well as daily virtual calls
  • Personally coach, train and mentor team members and provide career development opportunities
  • Monitor incoming inventory status at warehouses / distribution centers on a continual basis and help optimize ready-to-ship metrics without increasing detention and demurrage
  • Ensure that staff execute at the company's high standards
  • Ensure team completion of high-ROI initiatives
  • Oversee teams that coordinate ocean container shipping (including booking at origin), drayage trucking, analytics, and invoicing
  • Monitor developments and new technologies in Supply Chain Logistics
  • Manage to Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), such as cost per container and truckload, lead times, dwell times, and on-time delivery
  • Liaise with Procurement, Warehousing, and Finance teams regarding shipments and inventory / cash flow
  • Participate in scheduled meetings as needed to stay in tune with company requirements and opportunities and keep the appropriate departments abreast of trends and changes in the logistics industry
  • Participate in carrier contract negotiations and compliance
  • Track and communicate cost and performance results
  • Direct and manage inbound supply chain teams to optimize shipping activities, while working closely with freight forwarders and carriers to encourage high service level and value
  • Manage expenses to budget constraints
  • Utilize superior communications skills to motivate staff and develop effective working relationships with peers, executives and clients
  • Conduct annual performance reviews for direct reports within the department and address all employee performance problems promptly and directly in accordance with personnel policies and procedures
  • Develop and implement process improvements
  • Liaise with third-party business partners, such as steamship lines, freight forwarders, truckers, and origin managers


Skills

  • Familiarity with data science, business intelligence, and data analytics
