Job Description

This position requires a Journeyman Mechanical Certificate of Competency in Air Conditioning issued by Broward County. Only apply if you posses this license.

An employee in this class receives and processes work orders relating to the installation, maintenance, and repair of air conditioning and heating equipment, ice machines, cooling towers, pumps, pneumatic equipment, water coolers, and other related equipment for various facilities citywide. The employee usually works alone under general supervision and must exercise reasonable initiative and independent judgment in determining action to be taken.

This is skilled, journeyman level mechanic work of more than average difficulty in the installation, maintenance and repair of air conditioning and related equipment.

This job classification is included within the bargaining unit represented by Teamsters Local Union769 and therefore is subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Teamsters Local Union 769.

The City offers a wide variety of benefits to employees. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation.   • Maintains records on service and repair of equipment; prepares and submits reports
  • Performs related work as required
  • Recommends the replacement of air conditioning systems; participates in the preparation of specifications for acquisition of new equipment; recommends equipment purchases
  • May operate power tools in maintenance and repair work, including such shop tools as drill press, grinder and bench saw
  • Responds to service calls; inspects malfunctioning equipment; diagnoses, repairs, and replaces equipment
  • Prepares and prioritizes work schedules; purchases parts and equipment
  • Operates a panel or pick-up truck and communicates by two-way radio Installs HVAC equipment in accordance with local and national codes
  • Performs preventative maintenance on HVAC equipment, including changing or cleaning filters, adjusting or changing belts, greasing bearings, cleaning drain pans and coils, and checking overall operation of equipment
  • Reviews bids and proposals from contractors; coordinates schedules; attends meetings; reviews job plans and blueprints
  • Repairs watercoolers, ice machines and refrigerators

JOB REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Three (3) to five (5) years of Journey level experience in the maintenance and repair of air conditioning and refrigeration systems, including commercial air conditioning experience.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalency, or trade school certificate
  • Journeyman Mechanical Certificate of Competency in air conditioning issued by Broward County.
  • Depending on assignment, work experience in the maintenance and repair of central units up to seventy-five (75) tons capacity, air handlers and cooling towers.
  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid State of Florida driver's license within 30 days after hire.
Preferences:
1. Possess a Universal Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Certificate

Special Requirements:
Essential Employees may be required to work during a declared emergency. The employee's Department Head will determine who will be required to work.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The position involves heavy physical demands, such as exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Ability to climb ladders and work at heights up to 20 feet. Ability to bend, lift, climb, stoop, kneel, and crouch to perform daily job duties.

Depending on the number of applications and the quality of their education and experience, the examination may consist of one or more of the following tests: Evaluation of Training and Experience, Oral Interview, Written Examination, or other assessment method. Applicants must attain a minimum score of 70 in each part of the examination in order to qualify. All successful applicants will be required to pass a medical examination, including drug screening, prior to appointment.

An eligible veteran who enters an open-competitive examination shall receive preference points added to the total passing score earned in the examination as provided for in the Florida Statutes. To obtain veteran's preference, candidates MUST submit a copy of separation papers and the City of Fort Lauderdale's veteran's preference claim form (J-204).
