Vanderbilt University has an exciting opportunity for an HVAC Mechanic to join the Zone Maintenance Team in Plant Operations and Facilities Management. The HVAC team is responsible for heating and air conditioning systems, chill water systems, heating/hot water systems, steam systems, etc. As an HVAC Mechanic Lead you will be tasked with maintaining the comfort heating & cooling systems for academic buildings, dormitories, and athletic buildings on campus. As an HVAC Mechanic Lead in Plant Services, you will also troubleshoot & repair refrigerators, ice machines, air machines, chillers, and do preventative maintenance (PM) on all equipment.
Plant Operations provides facilities support for all construction, renovation, and routine maintenance of University Central space and facilities; housekeeping services for approximately 5.8 million square feet of academic, administrative, residential, and recreational space; grounds care for 330 acres that are a registered arboretum; turf care for athletic fields; and utilities for the University Central and the Medical Center.
Facilities annual budget exceeds $100 million in operating expenses and includes over 400 employees. Facilities manages major capital project expenditures totaling ~$125 million annually and facility renewal, replacement and large maintenance project expenditures totaling ~$20 million annually.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform all PM tasks on HVAC equipment
- Check condition of AHU
- Check equipment for proper and safe operation
- Repair exhaust units
- Other duties related to classification
- Remove/install pop-off valves on steam stations
- Calibrate thermostat
- Repair steam/condensate/AHU piping, including replacing valves, traps, using any applicable tools and equipment
- Condensate testing
- Replace thermostat
- Repair fan motor
- Repair or replace pump motor
- Repair intake fans
- Utilize work order system in all aspects, including parts ordering, printing work orders, parts look-up
- Repair AHU
- Check control compressor
- Change filter in AHU
- Assist zone technician, plumber, and carpenter in performance of their duties
- Operate vehicle/golf cart and perform operator level maintenance
- Process daily work order time sheet
- Check condition of intake fans
- Check condition of pumps
- Set up and monitor personal work order query
- Check condition of electric motors
- Keep equipment rooms clean and free of clutter/debris
- Repair, rebuild, replace pumps
- Check building pressure
- Change filter in FCU
- Check building temperature
- Repair PRV station
- Respond to hot/cold calls
Qualifications
- Experience with refrigerant recovery systems
- High School Graduate or GED is required
- Prefer to have completed a formal HVAC training program
- Proficient in troubleshooting and repairing HVAC split systems
- 5 years of experience in a relevant position
- Must have a valid Driver License
- Must have Universal Certification
- Must be able to bend, stoop, reach or stand for extended periods of time.
- Proficient at troubleshooting and making necessary repairs to FCU
- Must be able to lift as at least 70 lbs
- Working knowledge of pneumatic and DDC Control systems
