Job Description

Working for one of the US' most innovative, and fastest growing renewable energy developers, the Director, HSE is responsible for the development and delivery of HSE culture, strategies, and programs across the companies North American operations.


These strategies and programs are designed to manage, mitigate, and, whenever possible, eliminate environmental, health and safety risks to employees, facilities, projects, and communities where we operate. This role is responsible for ensuring program and regulatory compliance, providing regulatory and technical support, and training assistance at all levels within the business.


Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and continually improve HSE management systems, and support and ensure HSE compliance, enhance HSE performance, and drive adoption of HSE core values, results, and continuous improvement to an operational level.
  • Review EPC safety programs, EMR ratings, and OSHA 300 logs to determine suitability for project awards and compare the EPCs performance and ratings
  • Manage the application, renewal, and reporting process for environmental permitting. Lead the completion of annual reporting requirements/emissions monitoring. Represent the company by interfacing with government regulatory agencies and working to resolve regulatory issues and risk mitigation of future issues.
  • Conduct HSE risk audits, assessments, and inspections to identify potential hazards and risks and develop mitigation action plans.
  • Provide regulatory assistance, technical support, and training to all levels. Lead the development and deployment of company-wide training for new hires on safety and environmental issues.
  • Demonstrate depth and breadth of knowledge in hazard recognition, evaluation, and control. Initiate and drive the development and execution of tactical and strategic initiatives to eliminate hazards and reduce or eliminate associated risks.
  • Direct internal and external resources in response to safety and environmental compliance issues, enforcement actions, emergencies, acquisitions, divestitures, and changes in operations, coordinating with corporate resources as required.
  • Participate in vendor pre-qualification analysis as pertaining to HSE performance, compliance, and capability.
  • Visit project construction sites to conduct HSE inspections and audits. Coach field personnel as needed and implement any safety continuation training that may be required.
  • Comprehensively develop a strong corporate safety culture and Environmental, Health & Safety Management System (EHSMS) for the team.
  • Perform catastrophic event management and investigations for owner operations and utility scale power projects across North America.
  • Proactively design, develop, and implements a coordinated HSE framework including strategies, policies, programs, processes, systems, and governance in partnership with the EPC team.
  • Evaluate, manage, and implement standardized programs and information systems that monitor, simplify and document compliance to internal and regulatory requirements and permits. Advises senior leaders, managers and employees regarding safety compliance and environmental issues and develops and proactively implements risk mitigation plans.
  • Lead the development and deployment of an environmental program, including policies, audit program and risk mitigation. Conducts and/or coordinates internal/external safety and environmental audits to monitor facility compliance. Logs and tracks audit recommendations to completion and assists all levels in developing corrective actions for audit findings.
  • Provide oversight and liaise with EPC partners to ensure compliance with HSE framework and standards.
  • Support Hazard Mitigation Analyses and development of Emergency Response Procedures for operations and projects.


Key Qualifications:

  • OSHA 500 trainer and First Aid/CPR/AED trainer certified.
  • 5-10+ years of experience in HSE management in renewable energy (wind, solar, and/or battery storage) construction, electric utility, or power generation industries (required)
  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, or related field. Advanced degree and professional HSE certification preferred.
  • Expert-level knowledge of OSHA, OHSA, ANSI, ASSP, DOT, NFPA, environmental and EPA/CCME regulations and safety-related federal, state, and local regulations and laws. ISO 45001/14001 experience required.
  • CSP (CUSP preferred) certification (required). Other certifications such as ASP, CHST, STSC, CHMM, NCSO, CHSC, CRSP are welcomed.
