Job Description
The
mission
of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

Note for US based roles: Any offer of employment is contingent on providing proof of Covid-19 vaccination prior to your start date,
subject to approved medical and/or religious exemptions, in accordance with applicable law.

The New York Times is seeking an HRBP to support employees and leaders in the newsroom across our large news desks; which include: Politics, Business, Metro, Washington, and National. Reporting to the director of HRBPs, this role will be responsible for providing guidance and solutions to client groups on people related matters. While this person will support the day to day needs of employees on the large desks, they will be joining a team that supports the newsroom as a whole.
The HRBP plays a critical role in driving a people strategy aligned with the Company’s business objectives, mission and values. With pragmatism and an ability to nimbly work through ambiguity, the HRBP provides day-to-day HR support for the leaders, managers and employees of client group(s), including guidance and coaching, management of the performance enablement cycle, and oversight of process/HR administration. Working with HR Leadership Team (HRLT) members, HRBP and Center of Excellence (COE)/Subject Matter Expert (SME) peers, and client group leadership, the HRBP helps to develop and execute key people initiatives within their client group(s), ensuring everyone has the same understanding of what success looks like. Acting as a trusted advisor and thought partner to client group leadership – and providing insights and perspective to HR and company leadership – the HRBP proactively identifies issues and opportunities impacting the business, and offers practical ways to address them. The HRBP uses every interaction to role model the Company’s values and behaviors, and takes advantage of every type of activity (even those that are administrative/transactional) to drive change and ensure an equitable and inclusive culture.
You will work closely with the rest of the HRBP team, and the greater HR department, to build organizational capabilities, behaviors, and structures that support an evolving digital first strategy. You will be a strong partner and liaison between Culture and Lifestyle desks and the magazines and members of the HR team, and are able to deliver services that support the overarching strategy. With a keen ability to navigate the organization and collaborate effectively in a fast paced environment, you will coach and guide managers and employees on talent management, employee and labor relations, compensation, performance, team effectiveness, learning and development, and other related initiatives. If you are passionate about building a high performance work environment at The Times, we’d like to hear from you!
Responsibilities:
  • Work with Talent Development to identify training and other organizational development needs for business teams and individuals.
  • Work with HR colleagues to develop succession/talent planning efforts that ensure the teams have the talent needed to deliver on their strategy.
  • Lead/implement complex HR programs and projects that improve talent management functions across your client departments (job profile review, reporting structures, recruiting processes, compensation studies, and more).
  • Serve as liaison with clients to manage and resolve complex employee and labor relations issues.
  • Support the diversity, equity, and inclusion strategy of The Times.
  • Serve as an active member of the HR team, influencing and challenging colleagues.
  • Develop and use actionable people metrics to provide insights that help drive business decisions.
  • Assess employee climate, track trends in employee behaviors, and offer solutions to leaders as appropriate (employee pulse surveys, exit and stay interviews, and check-ins are examples of tools to help with assessments).
  • Provide day to day performance enablement guidance to line management (coaching, career development, performance feedback, etc.).
  • Partner with the legal department and labor relations as needed to reduce legal risks and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Gain a deep understanding of how your departments work. Scan for future trends internally and externally.
  • Provide credible guidance, advice, and support.
  • Liaise with the broader HR organization to deliver services and programs that meet business needs.
  • Build relationships with employees and leaders across the large news desks. Act as a trusted and credible partner who anticipates needs and proactively recommends solutions.
  • Support change efforts by providing consulting support, guidance and a framework for leading and managing change.
  • Collaborate as required with other support functions.

Basic Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of experience embedded with business teams to understand and influence their strategy.
  • Willingness to take unpopular stands when necessary and to challenge the status quo.
  • Broad expertise in organizational behavior, change management, talent management, policy implementation, employee relations and communications.
  • Proven negotiation, conflict resolution, influencing and stakeholder management skills.
  • 5+ years of experience in an HR Business Partner or Generalist role working with senior leaders.
  • Ability to cope effectively with change – can shift priorities easily, and is comfortable with ambiguity.
  • Ability to organize and track quantitative data, analyze and identify trends, and provide actionable recommendations based on data analysis.
  • Excellent customer focus to build strong rapport with clients.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Collaborative and able to build trust at all levels. Able to navigate difficult conversations. Effectively influences and uses conflict resolution, facilitation skills and inquiry to problem solve and surface underlying issues
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in media and/or working with client groups in the editorial field is a plus.
The annual base pay range for this role is between $140,000.00 and $155,000.00
