Local Progress and the Local Progress Impact Lab work collectively to advance a racial and economic justice agenda through all levels of government. Local Progress (LP) is a movement of more than 1,400 local elected officials advancing a racial and economic justice agenda through all levels of local government. The Local Progress Impact Lab (the Impact Lab) brings together local leaders, partners, and experts to build the knowledge, skills, and leadership needed to advance racial and economic justice at the local level.


About the Position:


Local elected officials are on the frontlines of the housing crisis. Often with the least amount of infrastructure and support, they are collaborating with residents and housing partners on the ground to improve and transform the housing system to support their communities. From, to , to , to – the local electeds in the Local Progress network are leading on housing justice. We are seeking a Program Coordinator who will primarily focus on implementation and expansion of Local Progress’ work on housing justice. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who has experience in local housing policy and is interested in running a multi-faceted, multi-geography program to advance long-term solutions to our nation’s housing crisis.


This role will work with the Program Director to drive the priorities and development of the Local Progress Housing program.


The Program Coordinator will be responsible for implementation of an organizational strategy that includes broad member education, providing 1:1 technical assistance to LP members, supporting issue campaigns in priority states (trans-local or state legislative) and cultivating the leadership body of LP members that guide this work, and more. The Program Coordinator will work closely with LP staff, including state-based staff in NC, TX, MN and NY, and external partners to develop resources to support members in advancing local policy solutions and collective impact work.


The Program Coordinator will report to the Program Director.


Primary Responsibilities


The Program Coordinator will:


  • Develop and maintain partnerships with external policy and movement housing organizations/leaders to align work and goals; participate and represent LP in national-level policy and campaign conversations as appropriate.
  • Support other program areas as identified.
  • Provide written and other updates to support fundraising for LP’s housing work.
  • Lead member education on various housing issues via 1:1 technical support to members and lead planning and implementation of broader educational events such as webinars, briefings, emails, issue convenings, and convening sessions.
  • Collaborate with LP staff to create resources, materials, and reports to advance housing priorities and mobilize members to participate in meaningful advocacy and campaigns at the state, local, and national levels.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with Local Progress members across a range of local jurisdictions.
  • Facilitate a steering committee of LP members that will provide insight and leadership on LP’s approach to housing, work with members and other LP staff to conceive of and implement strategy.


Required Qualifications


  • Ability to manage multiple projects, create and execute work plans, anticipate obstacles and identify ways to navigate challenges, and identify and involve stakeholders appropriately.
  • Strong communication and relationship building skills; experience in relational organizing and an ability to relate to a diverse group of people from a variety of local contexts and backgrounds.
  • A commitment to inside/outside strategy and movement governance that features deep partnership between “outside” organizing and “inside” elected officials.
  • At least 3 years of housing (or related field) policy or program experience with strong preference for experience at the local level.
  • A demonstrated commitment to social, racial, and economic justice and a deep interest in local policy, politics, and government.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as occasionally necessary and travel monthly.
  • Detail-oriented with strong written and verbal communications skills; the ability to convey and translate complex information for a variety of audiences.


The Ideal Candidate Will Have:


  • Experience with multi-stakeholder collaboration and/or coalition building.
  • Familiarity with digital organizing tools and strategies.
  • 5 years experience, with at least 3 years in a housing related field such as community planning and development, tenant organizing or tenant legal advocacy, housing finance, rehousing services, etc.
  • Experience in issue campaigns, advocacy, base building organizing, electoral experience, and/or government.


Salary and Benefits:


This position is expected to start at step 11 of our salary scale and other factors such as years of experience and advanced degrees will be taken into account for an expected salary range of $73,200-$85,200. This position is included in a union-represented collective bargaining unit, and specific terms and conditions of employment are subject to the .


We operate on a four day workweek with a default schedule of Monday through Thursday. We have a generous benefits package, including health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, five weeks of vacation per year, 20 sick days per year, paid holidays, and contributions to individuals’ 403(b) plans. The Local Progress office is closed between December 24 and January 1 annually.
