Job Description
Position Summary

Performs field and shop preventive maintenance inspections, minor and major repairs on medium/heavy vehicles, emergency vehicles/equipment, construction equipment, attachments, auxiliary equipment, and emergency generators; diagnoses and repairs all components and sub-systems, to include hydraulic and pneumatic; removes, repairs, rebuilds and/or replaces drive train and related components to manufacturer's specifications.

What You Will Do

  • Independently travels to perform repairs and maintenance to all vehicles, equipment attachments, and auxiliary equipment in the field and shop garages; performs repairs to engines, transmissions, differentials, hydraulic components, and other related sub-systems.
  • Maintains a safe work area to prevent accidents/injuries.
  • Performs preventive maintenance services in accordance with the established Fleet Management program.
  • Pays particular attention to personnel, shop, and equipment safety, reporting any unsafe acts or conditions to Supervisor(s).
  • Performs annual Department of Transportation (DOT) required inspections on vehicles or required equipment and repairs as needed per Federal Motor Carriers Safety Regulations (FMSCR).
  • Responsible for repairing HVAC and hydraulic system failures; responsible for repairing air and hydraulic brake systems.
  • Responds to on-call after-hours emergencies.
  • Performs other duties as appropriate or necessary for the performance of the job.
  • Understands, observes, and complies with all Governmental, Pueblo County, and Departmental policies, procedures, and protocols when performing job duties.
  • Performs welding in the field and garage as required.
  • Provides assistance, guidance, and training to technicians and mechanics as needed or directed by supervisor.
  • Follows all guidelines outlined in the Fleet Management Standard Operating Procedures (FMSOP).
  • Performs diagnostics tests using electronic communication software, web-based, and loaded electronic programs on all major vehicle and equipment systems to accurately identify malfunctions and cause of failure; repairs and corrects malfunction(s).
  • Inputs accurate and detailed descriptions of the day's work activities into the database; communicates clearly and regularly with supervisor and co-workers on all work-related topics.

What You Have

Education:

  • Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university in Automotive and/or Diesel Engine Repair Preferred
  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalency Required
Work Experience:
  • 5 years or more experience in Heavy Equipment and/or Truck Repair Required
Licenses and Certifications:
  • Valid Class B Colorado Commercial Driver’s License with tank endorsement current License or ability to obtain within 90 days Required
  • Automotive Services Excellence (Medium/Heavy Truck) Certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence current or ability to obtain within 1 year Required
Special Requirements:
  • Must successfully pass a background check Required
  • Must be able to pass post-job offer physical screening Required

All time off work taken by County employees based on the Early Released above shall be considered holiday time off for purposes of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

DEPARTMENTS SCHEDULED TO WORK ON HOLIDAYS
Due to operational requirements, some employees will be required to work on holidays. The employee must take the holiday by the end of the month following the holiday at a date approved by their Elected Official or Department Director

SICK LEAVE
Regular full-time employees accrue eight (8) hours per month with a maximum accrual of 960 hours.

VACATION

  • 0-5 years: earn eight (8) hours per month with a maximum accrual of 144 hours.
  • 5-10 years: earn twelve (12) hours per month with a maximum accrual of 216 hours.
  • 10+ years: earn sixteen (16) hours per month with a maximum accrual of 288 hours.

New hires are eligible to use vacation time after six (6) months of continuous service with Pueblo County.

RETIREMENT
All Regular Full-Time employees and Elected Officials are required to participate in the County Retirement Plan upon completion of one (1) month of continuous employment. A pre-tax deduction of 8.25% will be deducted from the employee's monthly pay.
