Qualifications


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Three years of experience in the maintenance of medical records.


Substitutions


College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of 15 semester hours for six months of experience.


Registration with the American Health Information Management Association (formerly the American Medical Records Association) as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) (formerly ART), a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) (formerly RRA) will substitute for one year of the required experience.


Note


College training will only be credited in 15 semester hour increments.


Note


Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

Differs from Health Information Processors 1-3 by the presence of responsibility for direct supervision of Health Information Processors and lower level staff.


Differs from Health Information Supervisor by the absence of responsibility for supervising all health information activities.


Examples of Work


Assigns, trains, supervises, and evaluates subordinates in the preparation of forms pertinent to the auditing process and coding of diseases in accordance with the dictionary of international Classification of Disease.


Accumulates and maintains data for confidential reports dealing with patient census, master chart index, mental, and chronological index and medical classifications.


Coordinate the maintenance of quality medical records systems in a hospital including the establishment and retention of records to comply with licensing and accreditation standards.


Apply existing policies for the control, use and release of health information.


Monitor the preparation and use of health information in legal proceedings.


Oversee the destruction of health records.
