We’re looking for a strategic engineering leader to scale Heard during our next stage of growth.

Heard offers therapists bookkeeping, accounting, taxes, and payroll all in one easy-to-use platform. By helping them take care of all their business needs, we create a world where therapists can focus on the thing they know best: helping their clients.
Unlike most small businesses, mental health providers lack the tools and systems needed to understand the ins and outs of their business. They're forced to work with a disparate array of expensive services or contractors to manage their finances, their taxes, their payroll, their savings and more. Not only is this outside their area of expertise — every hour spent wrangling finances or filling out forms is one less hour spent providing care.
Heard is growing incredibly fast. We launched in Jan 2021, and most recently raised our Series A in Feb of 2022, and a soon to be announced round of financing. We have a clear, well-funded pathway to becoming an industry leading software services provider for independent mental health practitioners.
About the Role
You will be responsible for leading, scaling and growing the Heard engineering team, reporting to the Cofounder & CPO. This is an exciting time to be a part of the Heard team — you will have an incredible impact on the engineering and product org, as we start to scale up the product, the business and our organization.

What you’ll do
- Own the development of product and core platform in a fast paced, start-up environment
- Lead & develop the engineering team
- Inspire the team at large
- Drive clarity for the folks you lead, have hard conversations, build trust with collaborators and ultimately create a space where engineers can thrive and grow
- Identify and codify engineering best practices, engineering culture, and engineering org structure
- Own core technical decisions and architectural changes
- Serve as Heard’s strategic technical voice, working directly with the founders
- Manage our existing engineering team, and placing functional leaders and structure as the engineering team grows
- Realize, implement and drive Heard’s potential
- Hire, lead and scale the Heard engineering team
- Mentor, coach and develop your managers and engineers.
- Develop and execute against long-term roadmaps & priorities
- Own and contribute to cross-org initiatives to drive business goals
What we’re looking for
- Prior experience working in a fast-paced environment, and ability to ruthlessly prioritize problems to be solved
- Experience with fintech, HR-tech, SMB Software and/or other similar industries
- You have the ability to attract top talent, and have defined and managed engineering processes across the board
- Experience building in highly cross-functional environments with complex products
- 8+ years software engineering management experience, specifically in a scale-up / high growth startup. You should have experience with growing ICs & leaders, performance management, and scaling and restructuring teams.
- Strong technical foundations and technical curiosity to support and mentor the engineering team
- Ability to balance business needs and technical challenges, and communicate tradeoffs effectively and empathetically
- Integrity in how you work, compassion for customers you’re working with, and a firm sense of technical rigor
- Located in the Bay Area or ability to work remotely in PST
What success looks like in this role:
3 months in:
- Established trust and working relationships with functional leaders across the organization
- Deep understanding of the technical architecture, team culture, product roadmap, business objectives and technical challenges @ Heard
- Identify and recommend technical changes to the Heard platform, in alignment with our business and scaling goals
- Identify gaps in engineering team and skillsets
- Build rapport and trust with existing folks on the product team
6 months in:
- Work in tandem with the leadership team to identify and prioritize problems to be solved, against our greater growth and business goals
- Full ownership of engineering hiring function and engineering team structure
- Provided clear pathways for IC and technical leadership growth within the Heard engineering organization
- Responsible and accountable against engineering OKRs and goals
12 months in:
- Directionally impact the Heard core platform and net new product opportunities
- Directionally own engineering strategy and technical decisions
- Deep understanding of both the 10,000ft and the 1ft view of engineering at Heard
- Grow the engineering team to support our business goals, while maintaining a transparent, accountable, excellent and empathetic engineering organization
- Full ownership of day to day function and management of the engineering team
- Well-respected technical and cultural leader at Heard
