DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is seeking an enthusiastic and creative candidate to join the Communications team as a Graphic Designer. This individual will contribute to the overall creative needs of the organization, reporting to the Communications Manager. The ideal candidate is highly self-motivated, organized, capable of prioritizing tasks and delivering finished products in a fast-paced, high-volume environment, create and design various materials for print and digital collateral as well as social media and web content that communicates the mission and vision of the Houston Parks and Recreation Department to both internal and external audiences. This position requires an individual who can complete the design process from concept to production; possesses strong communication skills, has the ability to ensure projects are completed with high quality and on schedule, can establish creative direction for the company as well as brand guidelines, is able to prioritize and manage multiple projects within design specifications and budget restrictions, can perform retouching and manipulation of images, and is able to work with a wide range of media and use graphic design software.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Executes concept, design, and production of print and digital collateral including but not limited to digital displays, programs, multi-page publications, direct mail, invitations, newsletters, social media posts, etc.
  • Assists with website content management and implementation
  • Creates digital assets for video projects and assist in video shoots as needed
  • Attends project-planning meetings with internal clients, contractors, team members, supervisors and other professionals involved. During the design process, consults and discusses with the applicable members about materials, layout, specifications and product.
  • Creates email templates and associated materials for effective digital marketing that aligns with brand standards
  • Archives files and maintain document library. Performs other duties as assigned
  • Creates, develops, and produces original artwork for internal publications, new productions, and world premieres that informs and inspires
  • Plans, researches and develops concepts for a variety of projects requiring graphic arts, such as pamphlets, posters, brochures and displays maintaining a strong and consistent brand for the Houston Parks and Recreation Department.

WORKING CONDITIONS
There are occasional discomforts from exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture/wetness and unpleasant air conditions. The position may involve occasional exposure to soiled materials and light chemical substances such as cleaning solutions. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four reams of papers or books (up to 20 pounds or an equivalent weight) may be required. Requires the ability to make fairly complex coordinated and sequenced motor movements in response to quickly changing external stimuli.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
An Associate's degree in Graphic Arts or a closely related field, or certification/licensing in a technical specialty program of at least two (2) years is required.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Two (2)years of experience in graphic design, using a computer and conventional methods, are required.
Two (2) years of professional graphic design experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

PREFERENCES

Preference shall be given to candidates with professional experience with Adobe Creative Cloud Suite and expert knowledge of lnDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, and Microsoft Office. Experience with After Effects, Premiere Pro, and CMS platforms, iMovie, and Final Cut Pro are a plus.
