Job Description

5! That’s the number of focus therapy areas for our Global Drug Development (GDD) team in Novartis and this position is across all 5 being at the heart of our Global Drug Development organization. Imagine the impact you could have as Global Program Director.

The Global Program Director (GPD) has a key organizational role to partner with the Global Program Head (GPH) and drive development of an integrated strategy and development plan for a regular global drug development program or brand, ensuring organizational alignment and seamless cross-functional execution.

The GPD is responsible for all Global Program Management (GPM) deliverables and is the single representative from GPM on the Global Program Team (GPT). The GPD may deputize for the GPH as leader and spokesperson for the GPT at Novartis internal meetings.

Major responsibilities:
Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Drives risk assessment and contingency planning by the GPT
  • Responsible for the quality of the integrated development plan, reflecting best innovative drug development practices, realistic planning, cross-functional alignment and ensuring consistency with individual functional plans
  • In partnership with the GPH and the GPT members, the GPD drives development of the program strategy and translation into a realistic integrated development plan and ensures consistency of both the program strategy and the development plan with the target product profile
  • Communicates program status and issues horizontally and vertically in a transparent and timely manner
  • Organizes GPT meetings and prepares high quality GPT agendas and minutes in a timely manner with responsibility for all GPM documentation associated with the program.
  • Supports the GPH in driving preparation of comprehensive program recommendations, board meeting presentations and updates for governance boards
  • Drives and/or coordinates development of strategic documents and prepares for phase transitions/tollgates in collaboration with the GPT
  • Responsible for program/project/financial information provided and with Finance, assembles and monitors financial forecasts and communicates variances/deviations to the GPT
  • Leads ad-hoc cross-functional sub-teams and task forces to address and resolve issues
  • Partners with GPH to enable a high performing team culture based on the Novartis values and behaviors, the expertise and contributions of the GPT members, shared responsibility, and the coordination of work towards a common goal

What you'll bring to the role:
  • 10+ years pharma industry experience
  • Strength demonstrated in strategic decision making, scenario evaluation and contingency planning
  • 5+ years of equivalent multi-/cross-functional leadership experience
  • Team facilitation skills that can help with objective setting for the team and the collective achievement of the objectives
  • Previous track record of success in working with and leading large scale and complex international and multidisciplinary drug development teams
  • Advanced planning and tracking skills, ability to use proper tools in program management and capable of managing multiple programs with respect to priorities
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for bridging between scientific and business participants, for driving a program to effective implementation and for managing effective international collaborations; strong verbal communication, expert in written communications, expert team player
  • Excellent project / program management skills
  • Masters or Doctorate in life sciences (or MBA with bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience in life science)
  • Leadership presence with the ability to present and interact with senior management
  • Expert knowledge in drug development (including early and late stage development)

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $183,200 to $274,800 a year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
