Job Description

West Los Angeles College’s growing Film/TV Production Department seeks a full-time Film Production Instructor whose teaching, creative work, and job experience demonstrates an in-depth understanding of the Film and Television industry. Successful candidates will collaborate, communicate and work as professionals with students, staff, faculty, and administrators. Applicants with a demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring a diverse student population are strongly encouraged to apply.


The successful candidate will:

  • Participate in the development of Film Production Programs that are industry related and prepare students for entry level positions in television, film, and Stage Craft;
  • Participate in recruitment, outreach, and development of cooperative work experience opportunities for students;
  • Assist with the cultivation of employment pathways to the entertainment industry;
  • Collaborate with faculty in the Arts & Performance Division;
  • Participate in shared governance related to academic and professional matters. These activities will occur both within the division as well as in the larger College setting;
  • Participate in annual advisory committee meetings;
  • Perform other duties associated with instruction and academic support, including updating official course outlines, evaluating student performance, and being available for student consultation;
  • Advise students on pathways to careers, certificates, degrees, and transfer;
  • Demonstrate knowledge of, and experience in, using the most current computer software and other technology to enhance instruction in such areas as set lighting, sound, camera, editing, grip, costume, construction, painting, and props;
  • Participate in the development of additional funding sources to support the program, such as grants and Foundation awards;
  • Teach 15 credit hours (day, evening, and/or weekends) per semester and maintain 5.5 hours of office time per week. NOTE: The teaching schedule may include online and evening or weekend hours, online or hybrid classes, or classes taught at local high schools or other offsite locations as part of the assignment;
  • Demonstrate experience and ability to teach the most current technology on the latest platform(s) and equipment;
  • Have experience in production and demonstrate ability to technologically support Film Production and Cinema departments’ films and projects.
  • Support and assist with development, and guidance for the maintenance and growth of the Film Production curricula, all work source and career pathway programs;
  • Establish an atmosphere conducive to student success and design well-organized class sessions in which students can comfortably learn;
  • Maintain accurate records in accordance with the policies, rules, regulations, and procedures of the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) and specific grants;
  • Support the process of equipment purchases, replacement, and repair needed to meet industry standards;


MINIMUM/REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of experience directly related to the teaching assignment, OR
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college faculty, staff, and students.
  • Associate’s degree and six years of experience directly related to the teaching assignment AND

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS – ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT AND COVID 19 VACCINATIONS:

A medical certificate indicating fitness to engage in administrative work is required for new employees at the applicant’s expense prior to employment.

Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or, at the latest, by their position start date.

Desirable Qualifications

  • History of established relationships with the International Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees (IATSE) union, and familiarity in working with union organizations.
  • Strong commitment to ongoing professional growth.
  • Member (or retired in good standing) of IATSE for which you are applying.
  • Teaching experience at the community college level.
  • Hiring and leading crews in your craft.
  • Experience creating an anti-racist, inclusive community, including but not limited to:
  • Experience recruiting and supporting historically underrepresented students to pursue careers in Film Production Crafts.
  • Familiarity with and commitment to the mission and functions of a community college.
  • Experience using student-centered and innovative pedagogies to teach and motivate students at all levels of college readiness.
  • Thorough knowledge of all entertainment industry safety and COVID requirements on set and ability to teach the specific safety classes required in your craft.
  • Experience advising students on pathways to careers, certificates, degrees, and transfer.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to work effectively and professionally with colleagues.
  • Ability to adapt varying pedagogical approaches to meet the needs of a diverse student population including, but not limited to, Latinas/os/x, African Americans, veterans, students with disabilities, student-parents, and foster youth.
  • Six years of work experience on IATSE productions as a key or lead position.
  • Familiarity with diverse modes of instruction, including online, hybrid, and web- enhanced delivery. (Online teaching certification in Canvas preferred).
  • Commitment to maintain currency in the discipline, including use of advanced technology required in the discipline.
  • Applying evidence-based equitable strategies for an organization.
  • Examining opportunity gaps for an organization;
  • Developing inclusive strategies for an organization;


Salary And Benefits:

The current starting range is from $66,220 to $103,100 for the 10-month academic year depending on education and experience. The doctoral differential is $4,180 per academic year. The District provides an excellent retirement and benefits package including medical, vision, dental, and life insurance to the employee and eligible dependents.
