FY23 - Music Instructor
Full-Time Tenure Track C Basis

Located on about 426 acres in the West San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles Pierce College (LAPC) combines state-of-the-art technology and learning with the picturesque beauty of its rolling hills. Founded in 1947, LAPC is a growing two-year public institution with more than 100 disciplines being taught to more than 20,500 students each semester and enjoys one of the highest transfer performances in Southern California. Seen as a leader statewide and nationally, LAPC is now seeking to expand its outstanding faculty by offering one full-time, tenure-track position in Music starting with the Fall 2023 semester.
DEPARTMENT:
The Music Department consists of several disciplines such as Harmony and Theory, History, Piano, Instrumental Music, Voice, Commercial Music including Electronic Music and Recording Arts and various performing ensembles such as Band, Jazz Band, and Choir.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
In accordance with its mission as a community college, instruction at LAPC includes lower division courses. Faculty members at LAPC are expected to facilitate student learning by designing varied and exciting learning environments. The regular weekly teaching load is 15 standard hours per semester. Evening and/or weekend classes may be scheduled based on department needs in addition to off-site dual enrollment classes at feeder high schools. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
- Participate in department meetings, concerts, and activities;
- Mentor students to promote student success and facilitate student achievement of the program certificates and degrees by assisting the department to advise, guide, and inform students of options and opportunities;
- Collaborate with peers across disciplines;
- Maintain scheduled office hours for student contact;
- Assist in recruitment of students for various Music programs;
- Develop and update department course curricula including developing hybrid, hi-flex and/or online courses that are relevant to the current music industry;
- Develop supplementary materials and incorporate instructional technology to complement textbooks, other published materials, and lecture presentations;
- Devote required time, in accordance to faculty contract, to campus and department responsibilities (committees, accreditation, etc.);
- Participate in required program planning and annual program review;
- Participate in the development and the assessment of student learning outcomes (SLOs) and program learning outcomes (PLOs);
- Assume departmental duties as assigned by the chairperson (e.g., plan and attend advisory meetings, revise course outlines, participate actively on campus committees);
- Build career pathways for job opportunities, internships and connect students to the current music industry including coordinating and managing advisory meetings and workshops in alignment with Career Technical Education (CTE).
- Develop resources, materials, and strategies, including using multimedia technology (Canvas) to teach students in a multicultural and equitable environment;
- Work collegially with members of the department, classified staff, students, faculty and administrators to maintain professional conduct and ethics, and foster a professional working environment;
- Collaborate within the department, college, local high schools and industry partners;
- Teach courses over an academic year in accordance with established course outline of record;
- Participate in professional development activities and maintain current knowledge in the discipline;
- Complete and submit required documents in accordance with district policy;
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background as well as accommodating any disabilities of community college faculty, students and staff.
- Master’s in music; OR
- Bachelor’s in music AND Master’s in humanities; OR
- The equivalent.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Health: A medical certificate indicating fitness to engage in administrative work is required for new employees at the applicant’s expense after selection and before employment.
Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustee's Policy 2900, all students and employees must be fully vaccinated or have an approved exemption. LACCD employees are required to provide their vaccination status in compliance with the LACCD Board of Trustees’ policy. Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or, at the latest, by their position start date.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- A learner-centered focus: able to inspire, motivate and empower students to succeed;
- Proficiency in industry-standard music software, such as Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Audacity, FL Studio 20, and Steinberg Cubase Pro;
- Strong working connections and relationships within the current music industry;
- Assist in maintaining inventory records of equipment and technology.
- A minimum of two years of higher education level teaching;
- Ability to teach courses, such as Introduction to Music Theory, Jazz Theory and Jazz Appreciation;
- Membership in regional or national music professional organizations, such as ASCAP, NAMM, AFM, RIAA, BMI, Audio Engineering Society, or Music Business Association;
- Proficiency in industry-standard music notation software, such as Sibelius, Finale, Notion 6;
- Proficiency with a primary instrument;
- An excellent academic record that indicates a strong foundation in teaching the discipline;
- Experience in overseeing music technology labs and rehearsal labs, and assess the need for equipment and educational materials; help formulate and submit appropriate grant applications and/or purchase requests;
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
The current starting range is from $66,220 to $103,100 for the 10-month academic year depending on education and experience. The doctoral differential is $4,180 per academic year. The District provides an excellent retirement and benefits package including medical, vision, dental, and life insurance to the employee and eligible dependents.
