Job Description
Join the San Juan Symphony Staff and be part of a community-oriented, dynamic, growing arts institution. The Symphony is searching for an organized, detailed oriented team member with project management skills and a can-do attitude!
The San Juan Symphony seeks a full-time, salaried Operations Manager.
The San Juan Symphony has been a centerpiece of the arts in southwestern Colorado for 37 years as the professional regional Orchestra in the Four Corners area, which performs in Durango, CO, at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College, and in Farmington, NM at Henderson Performance Hall at San Juan College. The Symphony performs four subscription concerts each season under the baton of Music Director Dr. Thomas Heuser, along with a Family Concert, Youth Orchestra Programs, Recital Series, Bach Festival, Chamber Music Festival, and several summer music programs for students. The San Juan Symphony is a standing League of American Orchestras member. The Executive Director is Chandra Stubbs.
This position works across all operations functions to ensure effective management of the Orchestra's schedule in support of artistic excellence and financial sustainability. The Operations Manager will report to the Executive Director and work closely with the Music Director and other staff members to ensure the organization's successful operation. The position requires strong leadership skills and working effectively with musicians, staff, and volunteers. This is a full-time salaried position. Scheduled weekends and evening work is required for concerts and rehearsals.

Detailed Job Responsibilities Are As Follows
  • Ticketing - work with the box office at venues to communicate special ticket needs & comps.
  • Auditions - Assist MD with scheduling, coordinating, and executing.
  • Reception Coordination - work with venues to plan and execute after-concert receptions.
  • Musicians' Lodging - Coordinate lodging of traveling musicians and guest musicians in private homes and hotels.
  • Assist in Marketing - Keep local newspaper & radio calendars updated with Symphony activities, and coordinate MD radio spots: contract banner placement and dates with the City of Durango. Deliver and pick up the banner as necessary. Work with volunteers to place posters.
  • Fundraising - Work with Board Members, ED, and MD to help coordinate events. Assist ED with donation thank you letters when needed.
  • Musically Speaking events (Wednesday night of concert week)- Coordinate with venue and caterer to plan and execute the event.
  • Program Production - Work with ED, MD, and graphic designer, to coordinate content for spring and fall programs. Coordinate printing, deliver necessary files, and pick up and distribute all finished materials. Work with the graphic designer to produce a concert insert for each concert, listing musicians.
  • General Office - Assist ED in answering direct emails and calls to the Symphony from patrons. Keep the office stocked with necessary supplies. Assist ED in keeping the office clean and organized. Pick up mail from the Symphony PO box and make any necessary deliveries.
  • Musician Contracting - Work with MD to develop and maintain a master list of qualified musicians and order of hiring preference. Send contracts to preferred musicians and see that contracts are returned promptly. Maintain a master file of completed contracts for the season and a master roster spreadsheet. Work with ED to make sure all W9s are collected and recorded. Notify MD asap of any planned absences of contracted members of the wind, brass, and percussion sections, and discuss with MD who should replace those musicians. Collect and submit concert hours and musician travel expenses to ED.
  • Green Room Snacks - Purchase and set up water and snacks for the musicians in the dedicated green room at the venues for rehearsals and concerts.
  • Musicians' Dinner - Coordinate with local catering/restaurants, Coca-Cola Beverage, and venues to plan and execute the Friday night musicians' dinner.
