Job Description

Position Title: Food Service Director/Chef

Date/Revision: 07/2022

Position Status: Full-Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Reports to: Executive Director

Supervises: 1 direct report


Position Summary:


The Food Service Director/Chef is responsible for creating a delicious, safe, and welcoming environment for residential food service at Mansfield Hall including continental breakfast, buffet-style lunch and dinner, snacks, and special events. The Chef oversees all aspects of menu design, food ordering and receiving, dinner preparation, and safety for the facility while creating a sense of community for students and staff while supervising one part-time dishwasher. This position is similar to a fraternity or sorority house chef. All meals must include accommodations for dietary needs and food allergies. The Chef should be comfortable cooking for approximately 25 people in a residential-style kitchen.


Essential Functions:

  • Perform other duties not specified, but essential to the functioning of the Mansfield Hall program.
  • Perform cleanup and breakdown after meals to include storage of leftovers for student grab-n-go.
  • Maintain a monthly established budget.
  • Collaborate with staff and students to design a weekly menu that aligns with student dietary needs and preferences
  • Interact daily with staff and students daily providing excellent customer service. Provide occasional cooking instruction to and invite participation in prep and cleanup from students.
  • Execute delicious meals in a timely manner. Solely responsible for all cooking. Prepare meals for other staff to heat and serve over the weekend.
  • Provide group-style culinary instruction to students to support the cooking of dinner and cleaning afterward.
  • Maintain product and supply inventory. Create and maintain inventory management and ordering systems.
  • Maintain cleanliness in accordance with Department of Health regulations and basic maintenance of kitchen spaces and equipment.
  • Document, monitor, and plan for dietary restrictions and allergies of students and staff. Constantly ensure accurate and informative signage on all products, dishes and menus.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in procurement, meal planning and preparation, and cooking meals for up to 40 individuals.
  • Culinary degree/certification preferred
  • Proven success working independently as well as within a team setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and effective communication, including written and verbal. Experience working with individuals who are neurodiverse is a plus.
  • Food safety certification is required (may be obtained after hire).
  • Executive Chef experience preferred
  • Three or more years of equivalent experience working in a food service environment.
