The mission of the Center for Molecular & Behavioral Neuroscience (CMBN) of School of Arts & Sciences, Newark (SASN) is to advance understanding of the brain’s structure and function through excellence in neuroscience research and training.
Our researchers pursue this goal through an integrative approach that cuts across the boundaries of traditional disciplines. They combine molecular, electrophysiological, neurochemical, anatomical, imaging, behavioral, and neuropsychological methods to analyze how the brain works, develops, interacts with the environment, and is modified by experience in health and disease. CMBN is also committed to serving the academic and surrounding Newark communities through educational outreach, community service, and research internship programs that train undergraduate and high school students.

Posting Summary
Rutgers University- Newark (RU-N), an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise is seeking a Fitness Instructor. Reporting directly to the Post-Doctoral Associate for an NIH-funded research clinical trial on Exercise and Brain Health grant, the position provides general lab support.

This position is responsible for and not limited to the following.
  • Leads older adults (ages 60+) through a structured exercise program
  • Must have expertise in dance and/or stretching, balance, toning programming
  • Efficient leading group fitness classes in older adult populations
  • Highly enthusiastic and encouraging
  • Maintains/cleans exercise equipment and supplies
  • Ensures participants are engaged in the exercise class safely
  • Answers participant questions
  • Greet participants before exercise class
  • Help participants with HR monitors
  • In close contact with the exercise administrator
  • Reports to Post-Doctoral Associate
  • Must attend meetings with other instructors, coordinators, and researchers
  • Personable, organized, and detail-oriented

This position is fully dependent on adequate external funding.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent, and/or up to 4 years of relevant office, clerical, bookkeeping, library assistant or related experience depending on the duties to be performed.
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the experience requirement.

Certifications/Licenses

Preferred Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to effectively engage participants as a public speaker
  • Current nationally recognized Group Fitness Certification or specialty class certificate, specialty class license (ie Zumba, etc) and current CPR/AED certification. Prior experience in Group Fitness, Personal Training, corporate health promotion, wellness, etc.
  • Must be knowledgeable about the industry with the customer skills to network, engage, and interact with all clients, guests, and participants. Must communicate professionally using appropriate vocabulary and grammar to obtain and relay information to and from students.

Equipment Utilized
  • Dumbbell, exercise mats, stereo system, resistance bands
  • Must know, use, and/or learn any and all specialized materials, equipment, and software needed to support effective and efficient performance
  • Computers (both PC and Mac), and have familiarity with spreadsheets (such as Excel), and MS Office Suite

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Exercise environment with relevant safety procedures.
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 30 pounds.
  • Adherence to relevant policies and regulations required.
  • Must be available on weekday mornings.

Immunization Requirements

Under Policy 60.1.35 Immunization Policy for Rutgers Employees and Prospective Employees, Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption.
