DUTIES

Most of the duties performed by a Wildland firefighter are outdoors. The normal duration of work is generally between the months of June through September. The position is most commonly seasonal. Most duties are related to prescribed burning, thinning, wildfire suppression, and fire preparedness. These duties include serving as a firefighter or engine operator during prescribed burning and wildfire suppression activities; conducting regular maintenance and repairs on various equipment such as fire engines, chain saws, and hand tools; serving as a crew member during fire break preparation which involves rock removal, mowing, trimming, tree and brush removal. You must be fit and have the ability to hike and work in extreme environmental conditions such as heat and smoke. You may have the potential to assist in incident/disaster response activities throughout the nation which may include driving, erecting tenting, and loading/unloading trucks to camp management, quality control and inventory.

  • Work hours will vary depending on the assignment. Seasonal firefighters are on call when needed and hours are not guaranteed. The maximum number of hours to be worked in a day is 16, unless authorized by the agency during initial attack. An average work week during fire season is typically between 84 -112.
  • Most positions require working on a 2-3-person engine or 20-person hand crew. It is imperative that you work well with others. Communication with others is a vital part of the success of the job. Primary contacts are generally other crew members, crew supervisors, and others in the wildland fire management organization.
  • Much of your success will be based on how flexible and adaptable you are to your surroundings and the unique environment. You must be able to follow instructions and the chain of command structure as well as utilizing your best judgment, situational awareness and safety practices.

Physical Requirements

As a condition of employment, you will be required to achieve an arduous rating on the "Pack Test (WCFT)," which requires you to walk 3 miles with a 45-pound backpack in 45 minutes or less. The WCFT is correlated to measures of aerobic and muscular fitness as well as performance in field tasks such as working with hand tools or carrying loads over rough terrain. The WCFT will be administered when you initially train or at your annual refresher. You must PASS the annual WCFT to be eligible for dispatch. If you are not able to maintain the fitness requirements you may be terminated in accordance with applicable personnel regulations.

Physical Demands: The work requires strenuous physical exertion for extended periods including, walking, climbing, chopping, throwing, lifting, pulling and frequently carrying objects weighing fifty (50) pounds or more.

Equipment Required

If selected for a fire position you will be expected to wear protective and safety equipment. The Company will provide the following items - hard hat & headlamp, leather gloves, goggles, fire resistant clothing Nomex , Fire Pack and hand tools. However, you will need to purchase a GOOD pair of firefighting boots with VIBRAM soles. You will be reimbursed up to a certain amount for the boots after you have been dispatched to your first assignment. It is a very good idea to break the boots in BEFORE the first day of work. Other than boots, you will only need to furnish your personal belongings.
