We are seeking seasonal field technicians for a project focusing on the distribution and abundance of Spotted Turtles and nesting ecology of Blanding’s Turtles in Ohio. This project is part of a collaborative effort between the Ohio State University, Toledo Zoo, and Wittenberg University, with research teams covering different areas of the state. Spring Spotted Turtle work will be based in Northeast Ohio (Ashtabula County), with summer Blanding’s Turtle research in the western basin of Lake Erie (Sandusky area). Technicians should have reliable transportation, with work-related mileage reimbursed. Shared housing will be provided, if needed.

This position is temporary and expected to run from late March – mid-August 2022.

Work Will Entail

• Assessing habitat; and,
• Nesting surveys;
• Recording data.
• Collecting blood samples;
• Setting and checking aquatic funnel traps;
• Collecting demographic and morphometric data;
• Inserting passive integrated transponders (PIT);
• Recording locations using a GPS unit;
• Radio-telemetry;

Qualifications

Attributes of competitive applicants include:

• Self-motivated with a positive attitude;
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and be insurable by OSU’s fleet insurance carrier.
• Ability to travel up to five days at a time;
• Dedication to accurate and thorough data collection;
• Ability to lift 50 lbs. and traverse irregular terrain (e.g., wetlands);
• Willingness and ability to work long hours in inclement weather (heat, cold, rain, etc.) with exposure to mosquitoes, biting flies, ticks, and noxious plants;
• Respectful and professional in interactions with other team members, partners, and the public;
• Commitment to maintaining a safe work environment;
