Job Description
Summary The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) and is committed to advancing knowledge and understanding of the Native cultures of the Western Hemisphere, past, present, and future, through partnership with Native people and others. Responsibilities The Exhibits Specialist is responsible for preparing, installing, and maintaining exhibits using a wide variety of materials, layouts, and techniques, and supporting collections-related needs like art handling, object installation, crate making, and data collection at the George Gustav Heye Center (GGHC). In this position, you will: Prepare, install and maintain exhibits using a wide variety of materials, layouts, and techniques. Working from design drawings, the incumbent prepares and installs finished exhibits and is responsible for their maintenance. Operate, maintain, and/or manage equipment for exhibits production or maintenance. Tools range from small hand power tools to machinery, including table saw, panel saw and band saw. Fabricate shipping crates, and pack, ship, and installs structural exhibit components, and use various leveling devices to hang artwork, panels and labels. Repair and refinish exhibit cases and furniture by making parts, replacing hardware, and filling and finishing to match existing conditions. Physical Requirements Work involves a great deal of lifting, aligning, holding in place, and transporting many heavy building materials (up to 75 lbs.) and works of art, as well as cases, pedestals, platforms, etc. Climbing ladders, using an airlift and working at heights up to 30 feet, and a good deal of walking, standing and bending are required. Good eyesight is also required. Manual dexterity necessary to operate power and hand tools. Qualifications Basic Qualifications: This position has individual occupation requirements of: Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study - illustrative design, commercial art, fine arts, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, or other fields related to the position. Advanced training in a vocational school, technical institute, or art institute above the high school level in one of the fields listed above is creditable as general experience on a month-for-month basis. A copy of your (unofficial) transcripts is required at the time of application if you are meeting the basic qualifications by education. or Experience in the actual type of work for which application is made. Unpaid experience is creditable, provided the work done was of a quality level and demonstrated the ability required for the position. This includes work in the appropriate field, e.g., design, modelmaking, art, taxidermy, or restoration. In addition to the basic requirements above: GS-11 Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as installing, maintaining and finishing exhibits. It includes experience using exhibit production and maintenance tools of table saw, panel saw, or band saw and experience fabricating and installing exhibit cases and panels using wood, metal and plastic. Or Education: GS-11 Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related such as illustrative design, commercial art, fine arts, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, or other fields related to the position. Or a Combination: Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications. For a full explanation of this option please see the Qualification Standards.
