Job Description

General information: Our Community Place (OCP) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit human services organization located

in Harrisonburg, VA with an annual budget of just over $500k.

OCP’s mission is to build a safe, loving community of restoration and hope for all, especially those facing

homelessness and other adverse experiences. OCP’s vision is to be a community of hope that breaks down barriers

and creates a safe, empowering environment where people can achieve their life goals, including joy, positive

relationships, affordable housing, and sustainable work.

Our work takes a number of forms, including:

- A community center/day shelter that provides hot meals, laundry, showers, educational programming, and

other basic services.

- A case management program that helps our community members access and apply for public benefits,

obtain affordable housing, manage finances, and navigate other life challenges. Case managers also provide

permanent supportive housing case management to those OCP has housed in the past.

- A commercial kitchen that serves free, hot meals to the community; runs a weekly restaurant fundraiser;

and occasionally caters other fundraisers for OCP and outside jobs.

- A nascent housing program, through which we have purchased and renovated property in the city and

converted it into affordable housing.

OCP encourages candidates from underrepresented communities to apply, and is an equal opportunity employer.

We work to achieve a diverse and empowered staff and board.

Duties and responsibilities: The Executive Director is charged with leading the organization and its employees in

accordance with our mission and vision, policies and procedures, and the guidance of the board of directors.

Primary duties include:

- Hiring, training, leading, and supporting the staff (8 full-time, 7 part-time, 1 contractual) across their

various fields.

- Developing, administering, and ensuring compliance to an annual budget.

- Communicating with the board, donors, grant funders, and broader community about the organization.

This includes both reporting necessary information and updates to stakeholders, and advocating for OCP

publicly.

- Building positive relationships both inside and outside the organization, including promoting a

compassionate and anti-discriminatory culture among staff, and collaborating with other organizations and

government entities that intersect with OCP's work.

- Empowering staff to operate and oversee the community center's daily activities and safety, while also

personally engaging with OCP's community members.

- Oversight and responsibility for raising funds for the organization, including through donor engagement,

events, and government and private grants.

- Oversight of administrative, bookkeeping, insurance and risk, human resources and all other areas of

non-program operations.

- Oversight and evaluation of all programs, ensuring compliance with OCP’s mission and policies.

Secondary duties include:

- Ensuring legal compliance and best practices in all of OCP's programs.

- Overseeing new and major projects.

- Implementing and assessing a functional organizational structure that allows staff to successfully work

towards our strategic goals.

- Ensuring that all programs and activities align with the strategic plan.

- Learning about and advocating for the local homeless and underhoused population.

Required qualifications:

- Demonstrable success in fundraising, grant writing, donor and special events fundraising.

- Team leadership and management experience.

- Written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.

- Experience working with and managing challenges presented by people experiencing homelessness,

poverty, substance abuse, mental health challenges, and trauma. (Candidates should also note that our

services are open to those on the sex offender registry.)

- Organizational budgeting and accounting experience.

- Being a transparent, accountable, and trustworthy person.

- Emotional intelligence, as evidenced by building compassionate and respectful relationships with people of

any/all demographics and social statuses; being aware of your own emotional needs and boundaries; and

remaining calm in conflict.

Preferred experience:

- Working at a small to midsize nonprofit.

- Knowledge of local service agencies.

- Affordable housing development.

- Ability to speak Spanish.

- Standardizing and documenting organizational practices and policies.

- Monitoring and evaluating program performance.

Hours, Compensation, and Benefits: OCP positions generally have significant flexibility, including limited

at-home hours available after a 90-day probation period. Full-time is defined as 36 hours per week at OCP, because

we believe self-care and time away from work are important. However, the executive director may have to work

extended hours in various circumstances, including fundraising events. Rarely, weekend hours are required (e.g.,

fundraising events held on a Saturday), but these hours are offset with comp time taken off on other days. OCP also

provides free community meals on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, and staff divide up coverage of those holidays.

Occasionally, emergencies may require the executive director’s presence at the community center outside of

business hours.

Compensation is dependent on experience and skills; range is $45k to 55k for the full-time position. Vacation time

(4 weeks/year) and paid health and mental health leave (12 days/year), are accrued monthly. OCP has a health flex

fund that provides between $3,000 and $6,000/year to an employee and family for reimbursable health care

expenses.
