JPMorgan Chase is seeking a forward-thinking, hands-on Industrial Designer for our JPMorgan and Chase Card businesses. This person has a proven track record in executing engaging card designs with an eye towards realizing innovative physical product experiences. Our ideal candidate is an expert in materials, manufacturing, and production processes with an appreciation for design, quality, and luxury experiences; works both collaboratively and independently; knows the importance of good communication and has a proven track record of it; pays attention to the details and polishes their work but knows how to meet a deadline in a fast-paced environment.
The ED, Industrial Designer – Card will be at the center of the card creation process, partnering and working collaboratively with internal teams and external suppliers in the engineering, development and manufacture of outstanding card and package designs.
As an Industrial Designer on our team, you will lead the comprehensive industrial design and development for a robust portfolio of card designs and packaging across 20 card sub-brands. You will play an integral role in informing design, innovation and materials selection as well as providing manufacturing and production expertise to deliver cohesive and best-in-class physical experiences for our card members.
In addition, you will be leading the development of all associated designs around the card experience including secondary packaging and unboxing. This is a unique role that bridges design and manufacturing – coordinating the physical requirements of product development, bringing together function, performance, and opportunities for cutting edge innovation.
Job Responsibilities
- Suggest manufacturing strategy to support both forecast and production requirements and build value analysis into every new development ensuring the manufacture and design provides the most cost-effective way to achieve design criteria but also provide the best aesthetics, function, and quality.
- Card and packaging outline development and Card and packaging costing specifications and technical profiles.
- Explore and implement sustainable materials and processes and keep informed of new materials, processes, and manufacturing processes and ensure that cards and packaging meet the needs of the brand, corporation, regulatory, environmental legislation, and consumer safety.
- Manage projects through internal production teams to ensure design and construction meets all JPMorgan Chase engineering requirements and ensure all projects are completed on schedule and meet the intended design, quality, cost, functionality, and manufacturability objectives.
- Support the development, engineering, and manufacture of all cards and associated packaging from design through final production. Willingness to challenge the status quo and bring fresh ideas that will make us ask, “why haven’t we thought of this before?”
- Develop detailed component timelines including all card development tasks and manage them and build and cultivate relationships with internal development teams and suppliers.
- Supplier recommendation and selection and work with suppliers and internal production teams to define specifications, design criteria and defect ranges to ensure optimal process flow from manufacture of cards through final delivery.
Required Qualifications, Capabilities and Skills
- Ability to communicate and present technical implications of creative ideas and solutions to peers, managers, business partners and external suppliers.
- Expertise in materials, manufacturing, and production processes with an appreciation for design, quality and luxury experiences and able to understand, embrace, and technically realize creative solutions based on brand guidelines for each card sub-brand and its unique positioning.
- Minimum BS degree in Engineering, Materials Engineering or Packaging Science.
- Experience working closely and collaboratively with designers and creative teams is required.
- Concentrated experience in prestige fashion, beauty, or accessories industry with proven development experience in premium or luxury products and comprehensive knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes, decorating techniques and materials used on components and secondary packaging along with knowledge of test methods used to validate component/package performance.
- 10+ years experience in luxury product and/or package development. Previous experience with Credit Cards is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to think creatively and provide innovative solutions and to work both within the internal creative team and production teams as well as outside suppliers.
- Technical competency in analysis of geometric objects in 2- and 3-dimensions including understanding of tolerances, fit and finish of components and subcomponents and travel as needed to meet with suppliers or visit manufacturing facilities.
Preferred Qualifications, Capabilities and Skills
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal.
- IOPP certification a plus.
- Possess a proactive, organized and detail-oriented work style; knows how to meet a deadline.
