Jr. Industrial Designer – Product Development

Position Summary:

This design position requires someone that can flex between design development and keeping an eye towards the details of material, product design, costing, and retailer needs and an understanding end consumer shopping habits.

Candidate will work to design & develop pet products that are innovative, on-trend and meet cost requirements, while supporting the growth of Worldwise in this highly competitive industry. Design work will include ideation, refinement of concepts into formal manufacturing spec that incorporates CAD files, fabrication & costing intelligence. Additional work will include creation of renderings for presentations & mocking up of concepts as needed.

This role requires someone who can juggle multiple projects, with shifting priorities, a self-starter is key skill set required for success. The candidate will collaborate with the management team throughout the design process & manage the sampling process with our factory teams through internal design & costing reviews through final handover for production.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design product concepts from ideation through hand over to factory to manufacture: Ability to visually communicate ideas by hand sketch as well as utilizing Solidworks, Keyshot and Adobe Creative Suite.
• Costing Awareness: Possess attention to detail with understanding of costing and how design details directly impact final product cost. Ability to work with Product Managers to understand the market right retail, competitive like items and incorporate into design offering that allows both retailer & manufacture to achieve profit margins.
• Maintain market & competitive awareness: Understand channel and brand differences as well as Worldwise core competencies to ensure design recommendations are inline to deliver financially, visually, and structurally in a highly competitive industry and marketplace. Learn the entire marketplace so all design work is innovative and differentiated from existing.

Key Success Factors:

• Basic understanding of product development constraints of following materials: plush cut & sew, electronic toys, molding plastics, wood/laminate.
• Demonstrate experience designing product to fit within a specific brand style.
• Ability to create detailed product specifications, sewing or pattern making knowledge ideal.
• Self-starter with ability to multi-task, flexes to adjust to changing priorities.
• Ability to hear “no” or try again repeatedly without being discouraged. Outside of the box, creative & blue-sky concepting skills.
• Strong design ability. Can collaboratively apply design skills with a variety of teams both in person and digitally.

Requirements:

• Degree in Industrial Design or Toy Design.
• Self-motivated with a consistent sense of urgency without ego or drama.
• Ability to lift 25 lbs.
• Pet lover must get joy from seeing a safe and happy pet… must be able to be around dogs.
• Fluent in Adobe Creative Suite, Solidworks, KeyShot, Microsoft Teams, Zoom.
• Self-disciplined with strong time management skills to achieve deliverable dates across many projects & changing priorities.
• Fluent in written/spoken English. Chinese is helpful.
• Creative problem solver with an open mind to new ways of completing projects.
• Experience in physical prototyping such as 3D printing, soldering, sewing is a plus.
• Be able to present projects in weekly ideation meetings.
• Full-time, 5 days/work week. Work location will flex to health & safety guidelines in Novato, CA.
• Intermediate understanding of mechanics.
• Self-discipline to budget time to achieve deliverables while working in a hybrid remote environment.
• Ability to ideate concepts quickly.
