Equipment Operator I

Employment Type: 0 - Full-time Regular
Pay Range: $48,042.00 - 72,063.00
Location: Castle Rock, CO and Parker, CO

Generally, the hiring range is $48,042-$60,052 annually. Qualifications, education and experience as it relates to the position will be taken into consideration when determining hiring salary. Opportunities for overtime may be available and sometimes required. Overtime is at 1.5 times the employee's hourly rate after 40 hours worked in a week.
This position requires a CDL (Commercial Drivers License) Class B at minimum, higher compensation is considered for a CDL Class A. If hired with a CDL Class B, employees are typically eligible for additional compensation after obtaining a CDL Class A.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (The following examples are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive.)

  • Helps ensure that all equipment is properly maintained. May perform equipment maintenance/fabrication.
  • Transports heavy machinery and vehicles to and from job locations.
  • Paints and sandblasts structures.
  • Responds to emergency situations including, but not limited to blizzards, fires, floods, and other disasters.
  • Assists with placement of traffic control signage and provides traffic flagging during construction activities.
  • Performs manual labor using various hand tools or equipment, including shovels, picks, jackhammers, power saws, and other tools.
  • Performs daily inspection on equipment and vehicles used.
  • Installs and repairs guardrail, fencing, snow fence, culverts, and other road structures.
  • Performs a variety of road maintenance tasks involving the operation of the equipment stated above and manual labor tasks, including pothole repair, concrete repair, asphalt overlays, culvert repair and maintenance, bridge repair, shoulder maintenance, ditch maintenance, shoveling, raking, fence construction, tree trimming, etc.
  • Performs snow and ice removal, which includes the application of anti-icing and deicing materials.
  • Collects debris along County roads.
  • Operates equipment including pickups, single axle trucks, tandem axle trucks, tractor-trailers, rollers, water tankers, mowers, sweepers, loaders, backhoes, excavators, snowplows, sanders, motor graders, dozers, scrapers, paving equipment, milling machines, concrete mixers, mud jack pumps, curb machines, sprayers, and other construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Provides good customer service. Collaborates with Supervisors to respond to customer service requests. Required to model good customer service and adherence to the code of conduct.
  • Performs miscellaneous minor maintenance work on vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Establishes and maintains positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.

INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT: Work is often performed independently and requires self-initiative and good judgment.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under general supervision with defined tasks.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position does not directly supervise other employees.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • One year education or experience in highway maintenance or equipment operation is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge:

  • Construction and realignment earthwork.
  • Geography of the County’s Street and road system.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the performance of assigned duties.

Skills:

  • Snow and ice control.
  • Use and care of equipment used in the performance of job tasks.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to use software such as Microsoft Office products and email.
  • Measure distances accurately and lay out work precisely.
  • Street/highway maintenance, repair and construction and work zone practices.
  • Maintain and construct drainage structures, native and gravel surface roads, paved roads, and roadway drainage systems.

Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and members of the community.
  • Apply problems solving skills in a variety of circumstances.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision and make independent decisions.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions and deviate from those instructions if the conditions warrant.
  • Perform work in emergency situations.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, safety rules and manuals, short correspondence, and memos and the ability to perform basic math.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS:

  • Must complete assigned training as required by the Department.
  • Must obtain a State of Colorado Commercial Driver License Class A with tanker endorsement within 12 months of hire. Incumbent is expected to obtain a Commercial Driver License Class A to achieve career progression in this classification series.
  • Must possess a valid State of Colorado Commercial Driver License Class B upon hire, with complying insurance. Review of motor vehicle record is required at time of hire and periodically throughout employment.
  • Incumbents in this position must meet the Department of Transportation physical exam and drug and alcohol testing requirements.
  • Must have a Flagger Certification.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Physical Work Environment: Exposure to weather, noise, vibration, confined/restricted working environment, and platform for movement. Working in roadways or constructions zones.
Physical Demands: Ability to perform continuous strenuous physical labor for up to 10 hours a day. (May exceed 12 hours during times of snow removal or construction or emergency situations.) Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds frequently. Climbing, balancing, stooping, standing, walking, walking on uneven terrain, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, fingering, and feeling.
Material and Equipment Directly Used: Office equipment, basic hand tools, power tools and small motorized equipment, and a variety of vehicles and heavy equipment.

This may mean being available to perform additional duties and hours beyond what is normally required. In the event that an exempt employee does work more than 40 hours a week in support of County operations during an emergency, such employee may receive overtime or other appropriate wage compensation in accordance with existing County policies or at the discretion of the County.
