Job Description
THE POSITION

This position is full-time telework with the requirement of reporting on-site twice per month. The selected candidate will have the option to report on-site in either Lehigh, Northampton or Carbon County. Work will be throughout all three counties.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) is currently recruiting for an Environmental Health Specialist. This position allows you to work in the field of environmental health providing investigatory, epidemiological, consultative and advisory services, permitting, inspection and enforcement.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position is part of the Bureau of Community Health System’s Environmental Health program (Northeast District) - which includes but is not limited to the organized camp program, local health program, right-to know program (R-2-K), collaboration on the public bathing place program, and emergency response team member. This position services the counties of Carbon, Lackawanna, Lehigh, Luzerne, Monroe, Northampton, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming.

The incumbent in this position is responsible for monitoring health status and identifying community health problems, diagnosing and investigating health problems and hazards in communities, developing policies and plans that support individual and community health efforts, enforcing laws and regulations that protect health and ensure safety, and researching for new insights and new innovative solutions to health problems.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Work hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.
  • You will receive further communication regarding this position via email. Check your email, including spam/junk folders, for these notices.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) full-time. All Environmental Health Specialist positions are full-time telework, but they do go into their assigned office approximately 2 days per month. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Scranton.
  • Full-time employment, 37.5-hour work week.
  • There are three alternatives for the assigned work location: Lehigh, Northampton or Carbon County.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of professional environmental protection or environmental health program experience; and a bachelor’s degree in a natural, physical, chemical, or biological science, or a closely related field; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Other Requirements:
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
