Brief Job Overview
This is a non-supervisory position responsible to assist in plan, direct, improve, and implement USPs Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) programs and to ensure a positive, safe, healthy, and incident-free work environment.
The incumbent will play a major role in providing support and driving continuous improvement to all US sites (Rockville, Frederick, DC, and Richmond)
The incumbent will interface with other internal departments and some external organizations.
How will YOU create impact here at USP?
Performs all phases of audits to identify potential EHS, workplace hazards, program deficiencies, and liabilities.
Responds to and investigates workplace injuries and near-miss events.
Recommends and implements appropriate risk mitigation measures to management.
Creates and provides general and program specific EHS training to staff such as but not limited to, new hire, blood-borne pathogen, contractor safety, emergency, and safety preparedness.
Provides guidance and supervision of contractors involved with EHS duties and/or contingent staff for occupational hygiene duties, which may include motivating, training, and coaching.
Revises, prepares, and implements several EHS programs, procedures, work instructions, trainings, and plans.
Supports EHS team in the management of all hazardous material and hazardous waste activities including the collection, transportation, and disposal of all hazardous waste in compliance with all applicable regulations. Reviews new hazardous materials and checks incoming material for SDSs, unique usage and storage characteristics. Works with end user to ensure proper usage and disposal. Provides guidance as necessary.
Reviews and maintains SDS data system.
Develops and oversees EHS training programs for employees in areas such as employee right-to-know, hazardous material handling, laser safety, emergency response, industrial hygiene, and life safety.
Drives compliance with applicable Occupational Safety & Health Act (OSHA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Maryland Department of Environment (MDE)regulations and best practices, local fire code, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, City of Richmond, Virginia Occupational Safety and Health (VOSH) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) biosafety guidelines, and all record keeping requirements.
Manages and troubleshoots the visitor/contractor acknowledgment system and assist in contractor safety implementation and compliance.
Keeps abreast of regulatory issues and technologies, including but not limited to EPA, OSHA, MDE, DOT.
Completes and submits several regulatory reports including but not limited to Montgomery County, EPA, and Maryland Department of Environment.
Provides support for continuous improvement and modification of US Security.
Assists with EHS and Facility key projects and work activities to design, develop, and implement risk mitigations and controls.

Bachelors degree required, preferably in an EHS/scientific discipline (environmental, chemical or life science preferred).
5 - 10 years of experience in a scientific environment with 5+ years experience dedicated to performing Environmental Health and Safety program activities.
Ability to assist in applying chemical and environmental regulations and developing compliant workplace programs.
Experience interpreting Federal, State and Local regulations regarding EHS programs.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including written, verbal, listening, and the ability to effectively communicate with and work well with others to manage projects, meetings.
Exceptional organizational skills with a high consideration to detail.
Must possess time management skills and can meet deadline and work well independently as well as in a group environment effectively and efficiently under minimal supervision.
Has critical thinking and problem-solving skills but is able to understand the departments overall objectives.
Team player with ability to build lasting productive business relationships with management and peers.
Ability and desire to work well with a diverse group employees and customers in a cooperative and friendly manner.
Proficiency in MS office (Excel, Word, Power Point, and Outlook) and technical savvy.
Additional Desired Preferences
Prior experience in a scientific, biotech or pharma-based industry.
The ability to influence without direct authority.
Results driven with demonstrated successful outcomes.
Ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
Able to work flexible hours when needed. In addition to normal business hours of 8:30 a.m. 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, serves on a team to provide 24 hour a day, 7 days a week response to emergency alarm calls and can be available on short notice to support requests during unusual hours, especially early or late in the day during the business week.
