Job Summary

Under the oversight of the Director of Environmental Health & Safety, the Environmental Health and Safety Specialist performs duties in support of the University’s Injury Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) by developing and providing training programs, conducting hazard assessments, industrial hygiene monitoring and workplace inspections to ensure worker health and safety. This position has high visibility on campus and will support all business units in achieving and maintaining a safe workplace. This position will meet frequently with stakeholders to determine and communicate safe work practices and will be seen as a subject matter expert in workplace safety. This is a dynamic role that requires flexibility, strong problem solving skills and the ability to work within a diverse campus community. This position will also work closely with fellow EH&S team members to implement initiatives designed to provide and further enhance a safe environment for students, faculty, staff and the broader community who visit the campus.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement and review written safety programs including but not limited to Lockout Tagout, Hazard Communication, Emergency Response, Fall Protection, Respiratory Protection, Hearing Conservation, Equipment Safety, Asbestos, Lead, Hot Work, Heat Related Illness, Confined Spaces, Bloodborne Pathogens, etc
  • Develop and provide training based on job classification
  • Perform Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) evaluations
  • Monitor federal, state, and local regulations for impact and applicability to campus operations
  • Perform inspections and conduct sampling to support campus water quality programs
  • Implement the campus wide Injury Illness Prevention Program (IIPP)
  • Provide compliance support for air quality programs required by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to research and analyze data from a variety of sources and generate reports including skill in identifying, investigating, analyzing and recommending solutions to problems or challenges
  • Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal regulatory agencies and requirements
  • Fluent in the use of standard computer and web-based applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite and the Google Suite
  • Ability to effectively interpret, organize and present information, ideas and concepts in written or presentation format

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree and/or equivalent training
  • Six years of administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs

License

A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Science or Engineering and/or a Bachelor’s degree from a four year college/university in Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health & Safety, Public Health, Industrial or Chemical Engineering
  • Equivalent to at least 4 years of full-time, progressively responsible experience in administering and developing environmental health and safety programs
  • Experience in an environmental health and safety program at a major university. Previous experience with asbestos sampling and abatement

Compensation

Classification: Administrative Analyst/Specialist – Exempt III
Anticipated Hiring Range: $7,597/month - $8,047/month
CSU Salary Range: $6,322/month - $12,285/month
