The Environmental and Social Risk Manager will be responsible for developing and executing environmental and social risk aspects of the organization’s reputation risk management framework, including risk oversight of key activities within the Bank’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) framework. The role will oversee the environmental due diligence process performed by business line underwriting functions as well establish policy, processes, and oversight activities to mitigate “Greenwashing” and “Social Washing” risks enterprise wide. The Manager will report to the Enterprise Reputation Risk Director.

The complex role requires a unique ability to assess and oversee reputation risk to the Bank as a result of its environmental and social strategies and actions. The candidate will also assess and ensure reputation risks associated with environmental and social factors of relationships such as customers and third parties are mitigated.

A successful candidate will have the ability to objectively assess and document reputation risk considering a multitude of factors such as external events and trends, industry-specific factors, and using knowledge of various risk disciplines such as credit or other adjudication functions. The candidate will also evaluate and drive policy content based on a combination of internal and external factors, such as industry and regulatory dynamics, and changes to internal processes such as environmental due diligence protocols and development of the Bank’s Sustainable Finance Framework.

Key responsibilities include executing and expanding the reputation risk oversight function, such as:
  • Author environmental and social risk materials for the Executive Risk Committee, quarterly management letters, and monthly Reputation Risk Working Group
  • Identify and escalate emerging risks to senior business and risk leadership that may present elevated reputation risk to the Bank
  • Partner with stakeholders across the Company, including Credit Risk, Climate Risk, the Law Division, ESG Program Office, Impact Finance and Business Lines to build out and expand the Bank’s Environmental Due Diligence to ensure it gathers the information necessary to ascertain relevant environmental risks from clients/prospects
  • Review and credibly challenge business line changes, external reporting and announcements to ensure greenwashing and social washing risks are mitigated
  • Review and assess risks associated with customer escalations that have environmental or social risks; provide feedback and recommendations to business lines on adequacy of risk mitigation
  • Create and oversee policy, process and procedures that manage reputation risk associated with environmental and social risks, including the development of policy requirements, controls and oversight protocols designed to mitigate greenwashing and social washing risks
  • Support company disclosure activities pertaining to environmental and social risk management, including voluntary disclosures and regulatory requirements/requests
  • Monitor environmental and social news and trends for incorporation into Bank processes/policies and customer risk assessments
  • Collaborate with Enterprise Risk Management to identify, asses and report on material environmental and social risks for inclusion in the Bank’s Risk Identification program and Risk Appetite Statement
  • Assess business line adherence to ESG-related laws through the Bank’s Regulatory Change Management process

Basic Qualifications
  • Typically more than 10 years of applicable experience
  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent work experience

Preferred Skills/Experience
  • Demonstrated ability to credibly challenge data/information and provide feedback to senior level managers
  • Effective presentation, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Current or prior project management roles in one or more risk disciplines
  • History of adjudicating relationships considering multiple risk factors
  • Proven adaptability to changing priorities
  • Considerable knowledge of social strategies and risks
  • Strong knowledge of industry environmental risks and strategy
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and project management skills
  • Thorough knowledge of Risk/Compliance/Audit competencies
  • Considerable understanding of U.S. Bank origination and servicing systems and processes, business models, risk management programs and organizational structure
  • Ability to build and maintain working relationships with business line leaders and other partners

This role is hybrid. Team members who are in a hybrid role typically spend three days a week at the listed U.S. Bank location(s), while having flexibility on their work location for the other working days.

The salary range reflects figures based on the primary location, which is listed first. The actual range for the role may differ based on the location of the role. Pay Range: $125,715.00 - $147,900.00 - $162,690.00
