Job Description

Duties

  • Analyzes repair practices and develops procedural instructions to be used by others on methods and steps to repair and modify electronic equipment on aircraft or on airworthy components.
  • Performs complex calculations and manipulations of test data to improve performance of systems, instrumentation, measurement standards, techniques, and procedures.
  • Designs and analyzes circuits, determines design feasibility, evaluates equipment performance under varying environmental conditions, and collects relevant performance data.
  • Supports professional engineers in performing experiments, research, and development activities requiring an in-depth knowledge of technical engineering methods, applications, practices, and principles to work on concepts and experimental projects.
  • Evaluates the adequacy of equipment for repair, calibration, and testing.
  • Plans and performs modification, maintenance, and installation of complex and unique systems on UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System) or manned aircraft; collaborates with partners, contractors, and researchers from other organizations who modify equipment.
  • Completes testing, evaluates data, and determines acceptability of equipment modifications, validity, test procedures and data, and/or legality of operation.
  • Analyzes and diagnoses faults in the operational configuration of electronic systems and equipment.
  • Duties described below are at the full-performance level. Duties assigned at a lower grade level will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee.

  • Position will require working from elevated surfaces, in confined spaces and extreme weather conditions, in areas with poor lighting, require lifting up to 50 lbs. unassisted, being stationary for long periods, etc.
  • This position requires the selectee to be able to successfully complete a Class 3 Flight Physical.
  • This position requires the selectee to have the following current License and/or Certification: obtain and maintain a valid state drivers license, CPR, and vision per NASA-STD-8739.6.

Qualifications

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

To qualify for GS-09, you must have:
a) One year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 level in the Federal service:

  • Applying concepts related to aircraft electronics to assist with engineering projects, electronics systems, or science and research integration efforts; and
  • Assisting with flight launch and recovery efforts.
  • Using aviation maintenance standards for the basic application of electronics on aircraft to install, modify, service, troubleshoot, research, and/or maintain avionics, instrumentation, or modified systems;
OR
b) Completed all requirements for a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or a related field.
OR
c) Completed at least 2 full academic years of graduate education in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or a related field.
OR
d) An equivalent combination of experience and graduate education

To qualify for GS-10, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service:
  • Working onboard aircraft to maintain, modify, troubleshoot, and/or repair avionics or instrumentation systems; and
  • Using established aviation maintenance standards and procedures to analyze or employ standard aircraft repair practices and/or assisting with the development of procedural instructions on methods and steps to repair aircraft or airborne payload electrical and electronics systems;
  • Assisting with installation, calibration, or limited preparation of instrumentation systems.
To qualify for GS-11, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-10 level in the Federal service.
  • Providing technical information associated with the eventual fabrication, repair, and/or modification of standard aircraft, research instrumentation systems, payloads, test devices, or prototype components.
  • Developing and/or applying procedural instructions or methods of aircraft repair practices for the maintenance, repair, or operation of equipment/systems;
  • Repairing aircraft electrical and electronics systems and/or installing, servicing, troubleshooting, and maintaining avionics systems on modified aircraft; and
