Job Description
Summary

The Editor/Writer is responsible for writing, editing, and proofreading a wide variety of content across various print and digital media. Much of the work focuses on general content, but sometimes it includes basic science. This position works closely with senior Editorial staff, proofreading and editing behind them, but also collaborates with staff throughout the museum on a variety of projects. The Editor/Writer is expected to fact check, be familiar with general editing conventions in The Chicago Manual of Style, and to know the Exploratorium’s style guide. This position reports to the Manager of Editorial.

Essential Functions

  • Writing and editing: Research, curate, edit, interview, and consistently develop engaging, accurate, and current content for a variety of projects—including public events, marketing and fundraising campaigns, teacher professional development programs, and general museum communications—under the direction of Editorial leadership.
  • Iteration: Incorporate feedback and edits from others and rewrite or re-edit copy as needed.
  • Proofreading: Proofread copy appearing in a wide range of print and digital settings—web pages, ads, exhibits, signage, and more. Ensure copy is aligned with internal style guides, and general editing conventions.
  • Production and project management: Set and track internal deadlines; negotiate tactfully with stakeholders. When necessary, provide project management for smaller projects.
  • Collaboration: Cooperatively and creatively work with graphic and web designers and developers, project managers, stakeholders, and other staff on projects, exhibits, exhibitions, activities, and programs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to stay organized and to take ownership of project work.
  • A tactful, cooperative attitude when editing, and willingness to be edited by others.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and juggle multiple projects under direction of supervisor.
  • Minimum three years’ professional experience writing, editing, and proofreading, preferably in a non-profit environment. Experience writing for public events or marketing campaigns preferred.
  • A professional portfolio of published pieces and/or museum credits.
  • Experience with web content management systems (e.g. Drupal) a plus.
  • Demonstrated dedication to accuracy and detail; willing to work through multiple revisions of projects.
  • Ability to collaborate as part of an effective team.
  • Enthusiasm for science, education, and the Exploratorium’s mission.
  • Comfortable taking direction and mentoring from senior Editorial staff and others.
  • Experience with project tracking software (e.g. JIRA) a plus.
  • Experience working with Google Docs and Google Sheets.
  • BA/BS degree or higher—preferably in English, journalism, or a science—or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
