Job Description

Timber Press is a publisher located in Portland, Oregon. Our mission is to share the wonders of the natural world by publishing books from experts in the fields of gardening, horticulture, and natural history. Grow with us!

The Timber Press editorial department acquires and develops beautiful, essential books for gardeners, landscape professionals, scientists, foragers, hikers, and plant lovers. We invite the reader to explore the natural world, whether in the garden, in the wild, or in the pages of a well-written book.

Position Purpose:

Sign 10 or more books per year and oversee their content, development, editing, and layout, while maintaining close communication with authors throughout the process. Explore new ideas in outdoor recreation, natural history, popular science, and related topics. Work closely with the art and editorial teams to ensure high-quality projects produced on schedule and within budget.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review text and illustrations of contracted or submitted manuscripts
  • Negotiate contracts with authors, subject to the publisher’s approval and sign-off
  • Work with authors to deliver manuscripts on time; accept or reject contracted manuscripts based on company goals and criteria
  • Use title management system to keep records accurate and up to date
  • Work with the editorial, design, marketing and publicity teams as the book moves from accepted manuscript to publication; write book copy; participate in jacket meetings
  • Keep abreast of trends in our content areas via social media, events and symposia, author platforms, competing publishers, and other imprints within Hachette Book Group
  • Work with authors to develop structure, focus, and content in light of competing books, potential audiences, target-list price, and production procedures and economics
  • Cultivate relationships with agents and foreign publishers
  • Cultivate and maintain a broad network of contacts among academics, professionals, and knowledgeable amateurs within the nature category
  • Work with the Publisher and Editorial Director to determine publishing strategies and the shape of the list
  • Prepare proposals and preliminary P&Ls and research competitive titles for publishing board meetings

Education and Skills:

  • Minimum four years of editorial experience, with experience specifically with illustrated books
  • Ability to manage a variety of projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Must be cooperative, flexible, and a team player
  • Superior writing and editing skills
  • Excellent content knowledge in subject areas
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work well with colleagues and authors

Work Location & How to Apply:

You will work a hybrid schedule (2 days in the Portland, OR office and three days from home).

The compensation range for this position is $60,000 - $65,000. Salary can vary based on a number of factors including skills, experience, and location, talk with your recruiter to learn more. There may be times that you will be required (or requested) to work overtime due to the nature of your role or exceptional workload issues or special projects.
