Job Summary:

Acquire and edit books and serve as a member of a book-publishing team in the service of Maryknoll’s mission. Successful acquisition and development of 15+ titles per year.

• Develop and maintain productive relationships with authors and prospective authors, groups, and organizations.
• Reject inappropriate manuscripts.
• Prepare materials for periodic launches of new products, catalog and cover copy, and contribute to successful marketing and launch of new titles.
• Master-edit and, as needed, line-edit manuscripts for production.
• Attend academic and other conferences.
• Review submitted manuscripts for quality and appropriateness for the Orbis program.
• Maintain delivery and publication schedules with authors.

Qualifications:

• Basic computer and word-processing skills.
• Understanding of book publishing industry (5 years or more practical work in publishing).
• Understanding of basic editorial functions.
• Capacity to work with inexperienced writers (helping them shape projects) as well as doctoral-level scholars in areas of Orbis specialization; diplomatic skills and ability to work effectively with others.
• Knowledge of the audiences for Orbis Books, including academic, religious and general trade.
• Graduate-level education in religious studies, theology, or related field.
• Excellent writing skills, ability to master-edit, rewrite, direct revision of works for cogency and literary style.

Salary Range: $70,000 -$73,000 per year
