Job Description

The Editor-in-Chief is the single source responsible for guiding and maintaining the day-to-day processes involved with creation and publication of specialized technical editorial content for print, digital, and online audiences and overseeing the subsequent production of that material for a monthlymagazine and other SAE Media Group (SMG) products. In coordination with the editorial director, the Editor-in-Chief also is responsible for planning future editorial coverage and personally creating content in a variety of formats for cross-platform use.


Responsibilities

•Write knowledgeable, appropriate and journalistically professional news, feature and department articles for the SAE Automotive Engineering and ADAS & Autonomous Vehicle Engineering magazines and e-media products according to established schedules, editorial-calendar directionals and current industry trends and interest areas. Lead and manage the planning for and production of the above-mentioned magazines. (40%).

•Attend and report from industry media events and programs to secure editorial content and coverage of automotive and tech-sector OEM and supplier companies and sources, representing SMG in a professional fashion. Develop and maintain effective journalistic relationships with these sources (20%).

•Make assignments to and edit the submissions of various external contributors and freelance writers, editing and processing the submissions in a timely and efficient manner and managing in accordance with budget. Assure grammatical correctness and observance to SAE stylebook. Ensure general journalistic integrity and appropriate tone of submissions from external authors (20%).

•Work with other SAE editors to assure the timely posting of editorial content to the appropriate website and coordinate with production personnel for publication of magazine. Support and directly supervise staff senior editors. (10%).

•Collaborate with advertising and marketing staff on custom media projects such as e-books, podcasts, and video. Support program development for SMG’s webinars and online technical summits.(10%).


Education/Experience:

•Bachelor’s degree in engineering, journalism or related field. Master’s degree preferred.

•Minimum 10 years of experience in technical writing or other specialized journalism, ideally in the automotive and transportation sectors.

•Extensive experience with the general practices and protocols of magazine and web publishing.

•Proficiency with new-media tools, platforms and content creation.


Specialized knowledge and skills

•High proficiency with all forms of mass communication and mastery of clear writing.

•Exceptional knowledge of transportation-related industries.

•Exceptional editorial project-management skills and ability to identify relevant new-coverage topics and trends within the automotive, automated-driving and commercial-vehicle sectors.

•Outstanding networking skills to be deployed both externally and with internal stakeholders.

•Ability to work successfully under multiple and recurring deadlines and to assist others in meeting deadlines.

•Willingness to travel up to 30% with sporadic periods of potentially extended travel usually not to exceed more than five consecutive business days.


Responsibility and decision-making authority

•Plan, execute and manage all aspects of magazine creation and production; collaborate with senior editors to coordinate daily publishing.

•Make assignments to and direct the actions of external contributors and freelance writers.


Budget responsibilities

•Coordinate with the editorial director and the editor of SAE Truck & Off-Highway Engineering magazine to proportionally direct a freelance-writing/editorial services budget.
