What you’ll be doing
The role will be responsible for assisting the Department Head with managing the practice operations. The ideal candidate will understand how to help us grow and scale revenue and headcount by managing internal operations, processes and procedures for a tax practice that operates nationally with a highly dispersed workforce. Key responsibilities will include driving innovation and technology, standardizing processes for the tax compliance and consulting service areas and ensuring discipline in adhering to these processes, overseeing and developing the staff resource management team, and assisting the Department Head with financial management analysis.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the GHJ tax team in executing the team’s operational and people goals including driving process efficiency, discipline and innovation, optimizing resource management, leveraging technology and monitoring financial success.

You will be responsible for…

  • Driving discipline within Tax to ensure processes and procedures are being adhered too and deployed successfully in a dispersed/hybrid workforce environment.
  • Leading the implementation of new processes and procedures and changes and upgrades to existing processes and procedures in light of current and future inorganic and organic growth and departmental goals.
  • Reviewing current department processes and procedures frequently to determine if they are fit for purpose to scale and grow. These processes and procedures will include, but are not limited to our workflow process, tax compliance and consulting delivery process and our outsourcing program.
  • Sharing and streamlining the documentation of internal processes and procedures to ensure ease of availability for the team to access, review and understand.
  • DRIVING PROCESS EFFICIENCY, DISCIPLINE AND INNOVATION
  • In partnership with our Technology function, assessing, understanding and implementing (as the needed) the current and future technology needs of our practice.
  • Leading, developing and managing the staff resource team to create a high-performance culture.
  • Creating an accountability plan in conjunction with the Department Head to ensure that chargeable hours and utilization goals are being met or exceeded and any changes in our workflow are addressed in a timely manner.
  • Working with our functional specialty leaders and department head to identify resource needs based on our workforce management planning process.
  • Partnering with the Department Head to future proof the practice, through workforce management planning.
  • OVERSEEING STAFF RESOURCE MANAGEMENT TEAM AND RESOURCE DEPLOYMENT
  • FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
  • Cross functional collaboration with our Department Head, Finance and People functions on future resource needs to ensure timely and accurate reporting of budgeted head count goals.
  • Develops strategies alongside the staff resource team and Department Head to forecast workload deployment including utilization of team (both actuals vs budgeted utilization and production).
  • Partnering with our Department Head and Finance on understanding and leveraging financial metrics including revenue, utilization, realization and the billing and collections process for the Firm’s benefit.
  • Ensures discipline is built and maintained around A/R collection from the Manager level and above within Tax.
  • OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Active participant within our Tax leadership team (Tax Teaminar).
  • Coordination of performance evaluation process in conjunction with our People Enablement Team.
  • Ability to identify and implement new strategic operational initiatives within the Tax practice.

What skills & experience you’ll bring to us

  • Ability to lead process and efficiency teams and staff resource management teams at a high functioning level.
  • Ability to collaborate and work on strategic initiatives alongside other departments in the firm including IT, People and the Firm’s Finance functions
  • Experience with implementing process and procedures into a tax department in the tax compliance and consulting area
  • We are looking for an individual with a track record of leading a Firm’s Tax Department Operations with multiple office locations and/or a dispersed/ workforce. This individual will have experience with implementing, monitoring and innovating processes and procedures and with leading teams in the areas of process efficiency and staff resource management. Managing others at a high level will be a key qualification for this role. We are seeking the following:
  • Ability to stay current with new tax technology and processes in the industry and to work with the tax technology team to identify areas of improvement and efficiency
  • Bachelor’s Degree, required
  • Ability to assess financial metrics in a tax department including utilization, revenue, realization and actual vs. budgeted outcomes
  • Background in Tax is a must including Operational Leadership roles in a multi-office tax department or in a dispersed/ working environment

GHJ complies with all local/state regulations in regards to displaying salary ranges. The disclosed range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled. Any offered salary is determined based on internal equity, internal salary ranges, market data, ranges, applicant's skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications (e.g. JD, technology), for example. At GHJ, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $175k to $215k.
