The Opportunity


Herc Rentals is seeking a Director, Sustainability based onsite in Bonita Springs, FL to oversee the Office of Sustainability and help lead and execute the company’s strategic objectives related to social and environmental opportunities across the value chain – from responsible sourcing to the impacts created by our operations. The role requires a deep understanding of current sustainability challenges in the equipment rental or business services industry, as well as a keen ability to work in a corporate environment with multiple cross-functional stakeholders.


Reporting to our Senior Vice President, Investor Relations, ESG and Communications, this leader will have a highly visible role working closely with leaders of key functional areas – Operations, HR, Procurement, Facilities, Environment, Safety and Compliance, Legal, and Finance and Accounting.


The candidate must have prior experience working in a corporate sustainability program and understand the various social and environmental impacts that are created along the value chain. The candidate must also have great business acumen, exceptionally strong problem solving and negotiating skills, a passion for leading transformative changes in the ways of working and an ability to work cross-functionally in driving solutions.


Responsibilities


The responsibilities of the Senior Director of Sustainability will include, but not be limited to, the following activities:


  • Partner with Accounting and Internal Audit to drive initiatives to position readiness of third-party audit/assessment.
  • Oversee multi-function ESG Task Force comprised of team members from field operations and corporate staff functions to drive major ESG initiatives companywide.
  • Lead initiatives that support our 2030 ESG goals and ensure use of the correct KPIs to measure performance.
  • With members from Operations, Facilities and Environmental Affairs, drive strategy development and measurable operating footprint improvements that reduce energy and water use, carbon footprint and waste generation and recovery.
  • Support the company’s Human Resources program in enhancing social awareness, community relations and cultural best practices.
  • Review ESG rating agencies (MSCI, ISS, SASB, TCFD and CDP) feedback and customer questionnaires.
  • Advise Procurement and Compliance on responsible sourcing and supply chain program to ensure we have the right approach to monitor for compliance, risk assessment, training, corrective action, and capacity building.
  • Maintain knowledge of best practices in ESG and undertake competitive benchmarking to keep abreast of important landscape changes.
  • Produce an annual Corporate Citizenship Report summarizing key initiatives and responses to GRI, SASB, TCFD and CPD.
  • Work to enhance internal collection of ESG data and subsequently develop KPI metrics for regions, districts and branches.


Experience


  • CFA, CPA, or certifications in sustainability and GRI a plus
  • Proven leadership experience including influencing direct report and multidisciplinary cross-functional teams
  • Proven analytical and conceptual skills
  • Proven experience in strategic development and implementation
  • 10+ years of experience within related disciplines
  • Excellent written/verbal, time management and quantitative/analytical skills
  • Graduate degree in business, accounting, environment, or sustainability a plus
