Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:At Seattle Humane, our approach to Human Resources Management is rooted in our people and our culture. The Director, People & Culture is a critical leader in the organization, a trusted advisor, responsible for overseeing and managing HR operations, employee leave and benefit programs, employee relations, coaching, counseling, leadership development, and supervising 1-3 department staff. The Director consistently demonstrates empathy equally with the ability to maintain and enhance shelter culture. This position is hands-on and expected to perform various levels of duties to meet the needs of the shelter and staff. Position is on-site 3-5 days a week. Reports directly to Chief People & Culture Officer (CPCO).


KEY OR ESSENTIAL AREAS AND FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for developing strategy and content for on-going staff communications.
  • Leads and develops People & Culture team members.
  • Partners with CPCO to develop, design, and facilitate leadership, professional, and culture enhancing programs including Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging.
  • Develops and delivers reporting on Metrics and Key Performance Indicators.
  • Demonstrates and ensures high standards of mission driven, customer service-oriented process management and program delivery reflected in Seattle Humane’s success.
  • Partners with the CPCO to manage and develop compensation programs.
  • Develops, maintains,diversified partnershipswithin the animal welfare and HR communities.
  • Consistently develops, adapts, and applies knowledge of shelter job duties, the work environment, and staff wellness in alignment with our mission and values.
  • Trains, develops, and partners with management, including the executive team, to ensure consistent performance management practices and annual performance review program.
  • Monitors departmental budget and participates in annual budgeting process.
  • Investigates, resolves, and coaches management on employee relations matters, conflicts, safety incidents and guidance through disciplinary procedures.
  • Develops and maintains meaningful, professional relationships with management ensuring thorough execution of effective HR processes with consistent guidance, and support.
  • Develops, manages and monitors end to end recruiting and hiring activities for compliance with employment laws and organizational goals.
  • Responsible for effective HR operations including HRIS and managing confidential records.
  • Provides consultation for effectiveness of department specific training programs.


REQUIRED EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources Management, or a related field. Relevant experience considered in lieu of a degree.


LICENSES/CERTIFICATES REQUIRED:

  • SHRM-CP or PHR certificate, or commitment to complete one within the first year of employment.


REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Exercises good judgement and decision-making skills.
  • Proven competence in designing and executing leadership training and development programs.
  • 8- 10 years of experience and progression in Human Resources leadership positions.
  • Effective written and verbal communication, including presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to work in animal welfare, understanding challenges and working effectively with empathy.
  • 3-5 years of experience in managing centralized functions such as Recruiting, Learning and Development, HR Operations and Diversity, Inclusion, Equity and Belonging.
  • Proven, cross functional, project management skills in small or large organizations.
  • Ability to collect and analyze data to inform HR operations, strategies, and organization development.
  • 5-7 years of experience leading, influencing and developing all levels of leadership and HR staff.


PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Previous experience with organized labor, collective bargaining, and labor relations.
  • Previous experience working in challenging animal welfare or social services environments.
  • Previous experience working with nonprofit organizations, in any capacity (volunteer, staff, board member)
  • Previous experience developing and supporting Diversity, Equity, Belonging and Inclusion programs and practices.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

General office environment with the option to perform some of the work remotely. Possible exposure to zoonotic diseases (diseases that can be transmitted from vertebrate animals to people), animal dander, and noise.

Work Hours:Normal business working hours, 40 hours a week flexible schedule with occasional evening or weekend hours for meetings or events. Remote work possible 1-2 days a week after mutual confidence and competence in performance and results.
