Job Description

McKesson Third Party Logistics is seeking a Director of Operations (DO) to lead our new flagship DC in Shepherdsville, KY. The DC is currently under construction and at 740k sq. ft, will have a full suite of our 3PL offerings including frozen, refrigerated, ambient and controlled RX capabilities. The DO is responsible for the safety, cultural, operational, financial and service performance for the distribution center. They will ensure that all organization activities and operations are carried out in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and laws governing business operations, and interacts with regulatory officials as required. They will also play a key role in creating a culture of trust with their team, inspiring them to do great work and have a little fun at the same time.


Key Responsibilities:


Compliance and Safety


  • Interface with employees on a regular basis in roundtables, staff meetings and one on ones.
  • Ensure the building is always prepared for either an internal or external audit.
  • Lead Distribution Center management team responsible for Safety, Security, Operations, Customer Service, Regulatory Compliance, Inventory, Computer Room Operations and Facilities.
  • Assist the management team in mitigating any safety concerns.
  • Supports and executes performance reviews for DC Leadership team, initiating development plans and actively coaching areas of opportunity


Employee Management


  • Provide leadership and support for on-going training initiatives for management and employees.
  • Direct staff to provide a work environment that fosters creativity, productivity, collaboration, and accountability.
  • Effectively manage all people issues including, but not limited to, labor, turnover, generational, and diversity and inclusion.
  • Overall responsibility for building a culture that is based on a strong foundation of trust, focused on team engagement, coaching, training, development, and performance management.
  • Maintain an engaged work environment by having a strong and friendly presence both on the floor and in the office.
  • Build bench strength through modeling I2CARE/ILEAD and development of a high-performing culture. Work with regional management on succession planning.
  • Ensure high quality employee attraction, engagement, and development at all levels.


General Management and Operations


  • Collaborate with corporate management and local management to develop and align strategic initiatives to implement locally.
  • Actively oversee DC operations and management by giving work direction, resolving problems, setting deadlines to ensure timely completion of work.
  • Develop and execute the vision for the facility, while tracking current processes and regularly assessing if best practices are in place.


Financial Ownership


  • Monitor and analyze costs and assist the management team in making budgets.
  • Direct local operations to ensure building’s performance is within budget and expense plans.
  • Utilize financial acumen and knowledge, especially in making business decisions.


Cross-Functional Partnerships


  • Works closely with Program Management to interface with our clients for business reviews, issue resolution and quality engagements.
  • Coordinate with Transportation team and Contractors.
  • Facilitate the relationship between the Inventory team and Operations team, to guarantee the DC can meet customer needs.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders from Program Management, Customer Care, HR, Engineering, Six Sigma, Finance, and more to ensure operations are identifying, meeting, and exceeding desired output and best practices.


Guide the business


  • Provide analytical support interpreting data and trends
  • Support the development of KPI targets, measure entitlements & benchmark against other areas of the business or against competitive data
  • Use knowledge of the specific data available, forecasting/analysis methods and visualization capabilities to provide insightful suggestions to business partners
  • Analyze data to identify root cause of problems. Measures performance against process requirements. Aligns improvement to performance shortfalls.
  • Be the go-to person for any ad-hoc data-related questions
  • Analyze data to obtain meaningful business and customer insights
  • Frame findings, prepare written analysis and summarize results using graphical representations and professional formatting


Typical Minimum Job Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities):


Education/Training –


  • 4 year degree or equivalent experience


Business Experience –


  • 12+ years operational experience including 5+ years managerial experience leading high performing teams


Critical Skills –


  • Excellent organizational skills, excellent communication skills (verbal/written), management skills, and contract negotiations.
  • Ability to develop, drive, implement and maintain innovation and promote continuous improvement around engineering processes, customer support, cost structure and quality initiatives.
  • Excels at building, developing, and retaining talent while driving operational excellence within a large DC environment.
  • Capable of handling multiple priorities and extensive time demands regarding both logistics and employee problems and engagement.
  • Experience with DEA regulation compliance and controlled drug distribution.
  • Advanced knowledge of Operations/Distribution.
  • Effectively navigates through complex situations, both internal and external, that may require multiple decision makers.
  • Advanced financial and business acumen to include knowledge of key financial statements drivers and levers.


Preferred Skills –


  • Knowledge of pharmacy management/distribution a plus.
  • Lean / Six Sigma training or continuous improvement experience.
  • Experience with warehouse management systems. SAP is preferred.
  • Strong PC skills and the ability to use McKesson’s suite of PC-based applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Microsoft, Outlook, etc.).


Working Conditions:


Environment (Office, warehouse, etc.) – Multiple environments including office and warehouse. Must be willing to work various hours to manage across the 24-hour work day within the distribution center.
