Job Description

Title: Director of Marketing and Communications

Reports to: CEO

Location: Washington, DC is highly preferred; remote will be considered for the right candidate

About I AM ALS

I AM ALS is a patient-centric movement revolutionizing how to end disease. The nonprofit provides critical support and resources to people with ALS, caregivers, and loved ones. We empower advocates to raise awareness and lead the movement against ALS in driving the development of cures. Founded in 2019 by husband and wife team Brian Wallach and Sandra Abrevaya, I AM ALS was born out of their desire to rewrite the ALS story for Brian and the tens of thousands of other people with ALS.

The Opportunity

In just four years, I AM ALS has established itself as a force for driving change in ALS through a patient-centric model. Through compelling storytelling, community-driven outreach, and media with digital marketing tactics, we have ignited a revolution that is now powered by an advocate network of more than 40,000 strong. Through this organized network, we have been able to pass key legislation, host awareness events nationwide, provide direct support to thousands impacted by ALS, and more. But we have a lot more work to do, both to deepen our relationships and collaborative efforts with those already part of the I AM ALS movement and to change the fact that far too many Americans still do not know that ALS is a 100% fatal disease. The Director of Marketing and Communications will build on the successes of our early years and power the next phase of I AM ALS’ brand and community. This includes supporting and fostering activism and deeper engagement within our current network of advocates as well as developing creative campaigns to raise awareness and increase policy action.

Responsibilities

The Director of Marketing and Communications manages, oversees, and executes all internal and external communications efforts, the organizational brand, and marketing campaigns to support I AM ALS’ overall objectives, including:

  • Brand campaigns: continue developing I AM ALS community-centric presence by creating campaigns with and about our incredible and passionate volunteers; enhancing and expanding the campaigns their teams work on, ensuring they fit our voice, and maximizing exposure and results
  • Thought partnership: work across staff and volunteer teams to maximize the organization’s mission and goals
  • Communications strategy: proactively develop, manage, and execute the organization’s messaging strategy, calendar, and content, in collaboration with the rest of the leadership team, internal stakeholders, and external partners
  • Innovation: maintain a constant pulse on developing trends, competitors, and new products to adopt within the digital space
  • Vendors: Manage consultant relationships, such as PR, graphic designers, online store, and website developers
  • Supervision: manage one full-time associate
  • Social media: Lead social strategy to engage, activate, retain, and grow the base of community advocates
  • Quality improvement: measure and evaluate engagement and effectiveness through insights into performance across digital channels
  • Digital marketing: promotion through digital channels including building, managing and optimizing email, social, website, CRM, paid social media, SEO, and expansion to optimize and utilize innovative platforms

  • Experience synthesizing data and feedback to make strategic recommendations to continuously improve process and outcomes
  • At least 8-10 years creating marketing strategies and elevating brands
