Job Description
The Director of Design & Construction Management is a senior leadership position in Facilities Management focused on leading a diverse team to successfully plan, organize, and execute the management and delivery of all capital design and construction projects for the University of Iowa including capital improvements for academic, health care hospitals and clinics, research, athletics, housing and dining, The position leads project teams and utilizes systems and processes to ensure the successful execution of projects, from early project development through project construction, completion, occupancy and warranty. While technical skills, knowledge, and experience in design and construction principles as well as a familiarity with various project management and project delivery methods are imperative to this position, the ability to lead, inspire, and focus on the development of collaborative team members is also critically important. Development and maintaining effective working relationships across campus is another major component of this job. The position is responsible for oversight of compliance with all state and university procedures and policies for the solicitation and procurement of design professionals and contractors towards successful completion of projects.
This position is eligible for a combination of on-campus and remote work. Remote work must be performed at a location within the state of Iowa and comply with the remote work program and related policies .
Duties To Include
  • Develop and maintain effective and close, interdependent and complimentary working relationship with campus stakeholders and internal service providers.
  • Lead the Design & Construction Management organization in providing effective management and oversight in capital project expenditures. Pursue a vision of excellence and provide leadership in directing transformational change and improvements in work methods, practices, procedures and performance standards to ensure results that yield the optimum total-cost-of-ownership of capital investments that meet UI strategic goals.
  • Develop leaders in D&C who build effective and inclusive teams through employee recognition, engagement, training and development. Champion FM values including workplace safety.
  • Oversee processes to review project designs for constructability, value engineering, cost estimating, commissioning, effective long-term facility care and service, and compliance with the Campus Design Standards.
  • Develop and manage annual operating budget, approve all expenditures and monitor fiscal performance of work unit.
Location: University Services Building (USB)
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm, additional hours outside of standard hours as business needs dictate.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management or related degree and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of staff at all levels of an organization.
  • Successful candidates will have extensive experience in project management, leading project teams, and overall leadership for a unit within a complex organization. Minimum of five years' experience in management and supervision.
  • Progressive professional career with increasing responsibilities including senior level planning skills coupled with a comprehensive working knowledge of sound project management and construction practices.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills in managing partnerships and complex stakeholder relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to and create integrated and collaborative processes with a wide constituency.
  • Superior interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and collaborative manner while creating, promoting, and sustaining an inclusive environment.
  • Proven record of effective leadership and organizational development in large and complex organizations or institutions with multiple business enterprises or divisions. Professional experience (typically 12 or more years) with increasing responsibilities in large and/or complex organizations.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Working knowledge of facilities management and total-cost-of ownership principles.
  • Extensive experience preparing managing and monitoring departmental budget enterprise financial models.
  • Knowledge of educational, research and healthcare facilities management/operations principles including compliance directives.
  • Experience and working knowledge with health care and research projects on a large university campus.
  • Professional Engineer or Architect registration/license within the State of Iowa, or ability to obtain registration or license within 12 months and maintain.
  • Master's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management or related or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
