Position Title: Director of Communications

The Team You’ll Work With:
The Mayor’s Office of Communications is at the heart of our mission to serve, empower, and represent
every resident of New York City. We are responsible for coordinating the citywide communications
strategy, including messaging from all city agencies. Our goal is to ensure the administration speaks with
one voice, effectively and consistently communicating the Mayor's policies and their impact on everyday
New Yorkers. The department includes several teams: Communications, Marketing, Community and
Ethnic Media, Speechwriting, Research, and Creative Communications.

The Problems You’ll Solve
Reporting directly to the Deputy Mayor for Communications, the Director of Communications. The
Office of New York City Mayor Eric Adams is seeking a seasoned Director of Communications. This
person will report directly to Mayor Adams and serve as part of his cabinet. They will oversee a team of
over forty communications professionals and will be responsible for developing and implementing a
comprehensive communications strategy that reaches New Yorkers directly in an increasingly complex
and fragmented media landscape. The successful candidate will have deep experience working in high
pressure and high-profile environments.

Responsibilities of the Director of Communications will include:

  • Developing and executing a comprehensive citywide communications strategy that aligns with
Mayor Adams' goals and initiatives.
  • Coordinating with all city agencies to ensure unified and effective messaging across the
administration.
  • Overseeing a diverse team of over forty communications professionals across various teams,
fostering a collaborative and effective working environment.
  • Directly managing five team leaders, including the Director of Speechwriting, Director of
Research, Executive Director of the Office of Ethnic and Community Media, First Deputy
Communications Director, and Senior Digital Director.



Director of Communications

  • Developing strategies to communicate directly with New Yorkers, utilizing a wide range of
platforms and mediums to meet them where they are.
  • Overseeing the creation and distribution of marketing materials, speeches, research findings, and
creative communications.

Serving as a confidential counselor to the Mayor and senior administration officials on high-profile and
sensitive issues.

About You
  • Bachelor's degree and 15+ years of experience in communications or a related field, with a

preference for government, politics, public affairs, or strategic communications.

  • Proven leadership and management skills, with experience overseeing a large team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to understand complex policy issues and develop clear, persuasive messaging around

them.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, managing multiple

tasks simultaneously, and meeting deadlines.

  • Experience working with diverse communities and understanding their unique communication

needs.

  • Strong strategic thinker and problem-solver.

Salary
The City of New York Office of the Mayor’s compensation package includes a market competitive salary,
equity for all full-time roles and exceptional benefits. Our cash compensation range for this role is
$165,000 Min Salary – $200,000 Max Salary.
Final offers may vary from the amount listed based on candidate experience and expertise, and other
factors.
