Job Description
Are you passionate about creating an economy that prioritizes workers and families over corporate interests? Do you enjoy organizing and driving persuasive issue advocacy campaigns that highlight the impact public policy decisions have on people and families? Have you worked at the intersection of policy, politics, organizing, and campaigns?

If this sounds like you, you might be the person we’re searching for to serve as the Director of Communications for Groundwork Action, the 501(c)(4) sister organization of . Groundwork Action develops strategic campaigns that beat back the conservative economic agenda and advance progressive economic priorities to improve the lives of working families. We rely on a full toolbox of communications and advocacy strategies – generating earned and paid media, engaging and briefing key decision makers, seizing on key rapid response moments, publishing innovative research and creating content, and organizing strategic pressure at key moments – in order to build an economy that works for us all.

The Director of Communications will be the communications lead for Groundwork Action and will help develop and execute the project’s overall communications strategy. This position will promote the campaign work of our team, with a particular focus on generating earned media for our messaging and advocacy work. The Director will also help drive our message through social media, paid media, and partner/allied organizations when needed.

As Director of Communications you will…

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Aggressively conduct press and media outreach, draft press materials, op-eds, and other key elements for successful press strategy.
  • Identify opportunities—and develop materials with other relevant staffers—to promote and publicize organizational initiatives, activities, reports, and content.
  • Act as an on-the-record spokesperson for our work where appropriate.
  • Manage various vendors and consultants to help amplify our voice.
  • Work creatively, using all the communications tools at our disposal, to help generate attention for Groundwork Action and our campaigns, particularly around appropriations, tax and spending, IRS modernization, and other progressive priorities;
  • Develop, manage and help build a dynamic communications plan and strategy for Groundwork Action.

About You

  • You’re committed to a just, inclusive, and robust economy that delivers opportunity and dignity to all Americans.
  • You’re creative and innovative, willing to try new approaches to solving old problems.
  • You’re a pro at multi-tasking and working under tight deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • You have a keen awareness of the news cycle and how Groundwork Action’s progressive economic worldview might fit into it.
  • You are an excellent writer.
  • You have experience with releasing research and policy materials and getting earned media.
  • You have experience creating and executing a communications plan.
  • You have an interest in progressive messaging on the economy.

In addition, it would be a bonus if…

  • You have existing relationships with reporters and media figures.
  • You have management experience.
  • You’re familiar with the progressive economic policymaking community.
  • You have social media and rapid response experience.
  • You are interested in, or have experience with digital strategy

The starting salary for this position is $130,000, commensurate with experience. We offer a generous benefits package, including three weeks of vacation, two weeks of personal leave, two week-long office closures, and additional time off for floating and federal holidays, zero-premium health insurance, a generous HRA, a retirement match of up to 6%, a minimum of 12 weeks parental leave, health club and cell-phone reimbursements, among other benefits.

We are a hybrid workplace, with two days a week in the office, and three days remote, as well as the occasional need to work in person for events and special projects.
