Job Description

Director of Marketing and Communications

Seismological Society of America (SSA) seeks a Director of Marketing and Communications. SSA is a non-profit scientific society devoted to the study of earthquake science and to the support of the seismological community.

Your Job:

The Director of Marketing and Communications develops and implements the vision, strategy, and tactics for all membership, publishing, marketing and communications initiatives including membership recruitment and retention, fundraising, science communications, public relations and branding/creative design. They will consistently articulate and promote SSA’s brand and mission. In collaboration with the SSA team, the Director will develop and execute SSA’s content strategy and determine the best method to create, repurpose and distribute content to different audiences. They will be responsible for enhancing the delivery of content and information to diverse audiences by utilizing data and implementing marketing best practices.

The Director will develop strategic plans to support membership retention and recruitment and oversee its execution, including the ongoing development, evolution and execution of the member value proposition, as well as member recruitment, engagement and retention strategies.

The position will report to the Executive Director but will support many SSA functions in a matrix environment. You will work closely with the leadership team to create and implement a communications strategy to improve author relations, solicit manuscripts and boost revenue through usage of peer review articles published by SSA journals.

What you will own:

Leadership

  • Implementing best practices and develops planning standards, policies and procedures.
  • Making recommendations for systems and process improvement when gaps are identified.
  • Managing contractors and coordinates indirect reports and peers to deliver a coordinated communications strategy that reinforces that SSA is a “big tent” for seismology, boosts engagement and attendance at SSA events and increases the standing of the SSA journals within the scientific publishing environment.
  • Managing meetings staff and provides leadership and mentoring; evaluates performance and determines work assignments, methods and priorities.
  • Collaborating in cross-functional SSA teams to identify tactics appropriate to the SSA audience.

Budget

  • Developing membership and marketing budgets and negotiates related contracts.
  • Managing the organization’s resources within budget parameters. Monitor expenses and take corrective action to meet financial goals.
  • Partnering with the finance teams, creates financial reports to evaluate key performance indicators and guide decision making.

Membership

  • Overseeing development, implementation and evaluation of all membership marketing efforts to meet membership and dues revenue goals.
  • Developing strategies and programs to drive member engagement, including new member onboarding and retention of current members.

Marketing and Communications

  • Serving as team lead responsible for SSA website(s), ensuring content is compelling and accessible.
  • Overseeing the analysis of website, social media, and digital campaign efforts, including trends, anomalies, testing results, and key insights. Develops and presents actionable results based on these findings.
  • Managing relationships with vendors and contractors such as writers, designers, and service providers to ensure quality of work, timeliness, and appropriate cost. This includes developing detailed plans for vendors and contract and budget approval.
  • Supporting the Social Media Specialist (contractor) and Press Officer (contractor), oversees the effort to develop and maintain social media strategy to enhance SSA brand and content, with a particular focus on peer-reviewed research published by the journals..
  • Utilizing analytics to drive strategic decision-making. Evaluates metrics and reports on the effectiveness of marketing efforts. Establishes and tracks public relations, marketing campaigns, and social media metrics.
  • Supporting the Press Officer (contractor) and Editor (contractor), directs the development, production, distribution, and maintenance of all internal and external communications, including but not limited to marketing, advertising, public relations, news articles, presentations, speeches, publications, and marketing/communications events.
  • Developing and implements marketing/communications/campaigns.

Fundraising

Developing and implementing communications strategies to achieve SSA’s objectives pertaining to fund development.

What you will bring to the job:

  • Six-Eight years of experience in a similar role and advanced subject matter expertise.
  • Science communications experience and expertise.
  • Knowledge of key programmatic, operational, and financial issues and priorities pertaining to the management of membership, marketing, communications and fundraising initiatives.

  • Interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence: Skill in building and maintaining effective interpersonal and team relationships with a diverse network of colleagues inside and outside the organization, and with other relevant individuals with whom the organization works (members, the media, other organizations, funders etc.)
