Job Summary


Under the general direction of the Executive Director of Ancillary Services, the Laboratory Director oversees the laboratory's day-to-day functions to ensure high-quality diagnostic testing and all laboratory activities comply with organization and regulatory agency standards. The Director of the Laboratory is responsible for staffing, budgeting, licensure, operations, quality assurance, proficiency, and staff competency in accordance with JCAHO, federal, state, and local guidelines, organizational and departmental policies, and procedures. Plans organize, and Manage staff competencies and education; implements and adheres to lab compliance policies; and keeps a well-documented and effective quality control program in the Laboratory. The position requires self-motivation, creativity, and capabilities to function in a semi-autonomous role within a fast pace and dynamic environment. Responsible for the supervision of up to 15 professional and clerical personnel.


STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE


  • Responsible for maintaining organizational facilities in accordance with JCAHO, federal and state, organizational and departmental policies, and procedures.
  • Make written/oral reports to the CEO on any matters concerning the laboratory services as needed, necessary, required, or requested.
  • Perform other duties as necessary, assigned, and/or required.
  • Ensure correct disposal of all chemicals, used/contaminated supplies, and biological specimens to comply with existing regulations and established facility policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that equipment receives proper scheduled maintenance and calibration and document any maintenance calibration performed.
  • Ensure correct labeling of chemicals and biologicals to comply with existing regulations and established facility policies and procedures.
  • Maintain department expenditure records as required and/or perform cost analysis as needed.
  • Ensure the laboratory and storage areas are maintained cleanly and safely.
  • Reviews and acts upon authorized inspection agency standards, requirements, and reports.
  • Develop and periodically review a listing of authorized symbols and abbreviations for charting, ordering tests, etc.
  • Coordinates and participates in continuing education.
  • Recommend to the CEO and CFO the supply and equipment needs of the department.
  • Interviews and makes recommendations for hiring of personnel within the department.
  • Promote quality, high standards of performance, and good morale in the department.
  • Makes recommendations to Administration for and assists in the development of new programs and research for special projects.
  • Maintain an adequate supply of laboratory materials, e.g., reagents, and test tubes, to meet the needs of the patients and facility.
  • Ensures departmental adherence to proper infection control, OSHA, and safety standards.
  • Maintain appropriate workflow by proper staffing and performing benchwork as necessary.
  • Perform administrative requirements such as completing necessary forms, reports, etc., and submit as required.
  • Reviews Laboratory policies and procedures and job descriptions and makes recommended changes.
  • Responsible for the assessment and maintenance of the department performance improvement program.
  • Evaluates the qualification and competence of department personnel in accordance with the time frame established by the organization.
  • Prepares departmental annual operating budget and capital equipment budget; and operates department expenditures within the approved budget.
