Job Description

Requisition Id 10563

Purpose:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. Our diverse capabilities span a broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines, enabling the Laboratory to explore fundamental science challenges and to carry out the research needed to accelerate the delivery of solutions to the marketplace. We seek to hire an Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate (CCSD). CCSD emphasizes support of the Department of Energy Office of Science mission of the Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) program “to discover, develop, and deploy computational and networking capabilities to analyze, model, simulate, and predict complex phenomena.”

CCSD sustains leadership and scientific impact in computing and computational sciences by:

  • Providing unique opportunity for innovation based on multiagency collaboration
  • Delivering leading-edge science relevant to missions of DOE and key federal and state agencies
  • Focusing on enriching experiences for students and postdoctoral researchers
  • Providing the world’s most powerful open advanced computing ecosystem for scalable computing and simulation, data and analytics at any scale, and scalable cyber-secure infrastructure for science
  • Investing in cross-cutting partnerships with industry and academia
  • Following a well-defined path for maintaining world leadership in these critical areas
  • Recruiting strong, diverse candidates to ensure ORNL develops, attracts, and retains R&D staff members who position the lab for global leadership in each science area

As a key member of the Laboratory’s Senior Leadership Team, the Associate Laboratory Director works closely with the Laboratory Director, Deputy Lab Directors, and other Associate Laboratory Directors to address ORNL’s mission. Reporting to the Laboratory Director, the Associate Laboratory Director is accountable for strategic planning, people and operations leadership, research quality and integrity, safety, and communication for the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate.

In this capacity, you will lead the science and technology programs in mathematical, computational, and computer sciences research with responsibilities in three integrating roles to: 1) establish a compelling future vision complemented with a strategic execution plan, 2) strengthen stakeholder engagement and relationship management with major sponsors, and 3) drive staff professional growth and development while creating organizational momentum that enhances our facilities and capabilities.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Foster initiatives for employee development through mentoring, performance, and succession planning.
  • Provide leadership in the integration of computing and computational sciences capabilities across ORNL to promote laboratory-wide growth, including materials and chemical sciences, energy sciences and technology, life and environmental sciences, neutron sciences, and national security.
  • Enhance world-leading scientific research programs in mathematics, computation, and computer sciences, as well as deliver high impact science with notable achievements.
  • Implement management systems, operations, safety, compliance, and performance assessments across the entire Directorate, and serve on the Laboratory Leadership Team.
  • Act as the primary Directorate contact and represent the Directorate on Lab-Level. committees, task forces, and working groups with a shared responsibility for the overall Lab wide science and technology strategy.
  • Develop and manage self-assessment programs, assuring alignment with the Laboratory Critical Outcomes, the Laboratory Agenda, and other internal or DOE performance metrics.
  • Integrate and implement commercialization activities through the Directorate’s business plan and strategies.
  • Identify staffing and other resource requirements and support recruiting initiatives in diversity, fellowships, and university relations.
  • Strengthen science to energy integration at ORNL in areas relevant to mathematical, computational, and computer sciences research, including leading quantum information sciences, artificial intelligence, advanced computing methods development, edge computing, among others.
  • Maintain compliance with Laboratory policies, standards, and procedures as documented in SBMS and implement operational standards to meet the expectations of the Laboratory Agenda.
  • Ensure growth of world-leading quantum science research capabilities in the Quantum Science Center (QSC).
  • Manage DOE Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) programs with distinction by ensuring high impact publications and successful reviews in all program areas, including effective oversight of the management and operations of the ORNL Leadership Computing Facility.
  • Manage programmatic funds and discretionary investments for research and program development, and act as steward for laboratory operations, facilities, capital, and equipment.
  • Work with the Laboratory Director and Leadership Team to identify and implement strategic research opportunities, including LDRD (Laboratory-Directed Research and Development) priorities.

Qualifications Required:

  • 3-10 years of demonstrated executive management experience, including developing and leading large, complex and multidisciplinary research programs and organizations.
  • Experience communicating with key stakeholders, clients, program sponsors, and internal staff and regarded as a leading expert and visionary.
  • Demonstrated experience successfully developing, implementing, and executing scientific strategy with engagement from critical stakeholders.
  • An internationally recognized research stature in one of the disciplines within Computing and Computational Sciences and experience in managing large multidisciplinary science programs.
  • Ph.D. in a technical related field and 15+ years of professional experience.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience with the DOE Office of Science is preferred, especially Advanced Scientific Computing Research.

Special Requirement:

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
