About Latinos For Education
Latinos for Education (L4E) is a fast-growing non-profit organization that supports a national ecosystem of Latino education leaders to access highly influential roles and opportunities. Our mission is to develop, place and connect essential Latino leadership in the education sector, while mobilizing Latino voices to promote practices and policies that remove barriers to equitable educational opportunity. Since our founding in 2016, L4E has powerfully expanded our presence in the education non-profit sector through our dynamic programming and level of support to each of our Latino fellows and alumni.
Overview Of The Role
Reporting to the Managing Director, National Marketing & Communications, the Director, Communications is a key member of the External Affairs team who will provide strategic direction and guidance to the organization's communication efforts to enhance its reputation, visibility, and brand awareness. This person will be responsible for managing L4E’s varied and integrated communications products and services including annual reports, newsletters, blogs, op-eds, press releases, general copywriting, and other online communications.
Specific responsibilities include:
Communications Strategy and Leadership
  • Provide coaching, guidance, and talking points to staff members and partners to ensure the effective implementation of communication strategies
  • Develop an integrated strategic communications plan and editorial calendar to advance Latinos for Education’s brand identity; broaden awareness of its programs and priorities; and increase the visibility of the organization across key stakeholder audiences
  • Develop and maintain the organization’s key messages and ensure integration of these messages across mediums, regionally and nationally
  • Track and analyze the impact of communication efforts and adjust strategies as needed to achieve desired outcomes
Communications Strategy Implementation
  • Oversee the writing and editing of all Latinos for Education written communications and content such as the annual report, long-form marketing collateral materials, electronic communications, Latinos for Education’s website, blogs, op-eds, press releases, and general copywriting for social media and donor cultivation and stewardship
  • Create talking points and speeches for external speaking engagements for Latinos for Education staff members
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the communications function including budgeting, planning and staff development
  • Collaborate with public relations firm and external affairs team on external talking points
General Management
  • Help build organizational culture and embody Latinos for Education core values
  • Participate in team meetings and collaborate with teammates vertically and horizontally
  • Collaborate closely with members of the External Affairs team to ensure communications-related projects and deliverables are managed effectively and meet agreed-upon deadlines
Requirements
  • 7+ years of professional experience in communications in a non-profit organization.
  • Innovative thinker, with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and output
  • Creative and thoughtful on how new media technologies can be utilized
  • Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills, including negotiation and conflict-resolution skills
  • Demonstrated experience and leadership in managing a comprehensive strategic communication, media relations, and marketing program to advance an organization’s mission and goals
  • 3+ years of experience owning or leading a strategic communications strategy
  • Demonstrated skill and comfort in proactively building relationships with top-tier reporters and editors, and in successfully positioning subject matter with the media to achieve high-impact placements
  • Extensive successful writing and editing experience (externally focused) with a variety of print and online communications media
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with senior management, Latinos for Education’s Board of Directors and staff
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual in Spanish
  • Experience with Salesforce, Canva, and other marketing platforms (Hubspot, MailChimp, etc.)
  • Master’s degree in related field

Compensation Philosophy
Latinos for Education offers competitive industry rate salary bands to retain and grow talented individuals. We conduct a robust internal and external benchmarking process to ensure that our salaries are competitive.
The salary range for this role is commensurate with experience and is as follows:
  • Mid-Point: $110,000
  • Compensation Band: $93,500 - $126,000
The compensation band midpoint represents the market rate for a position, and a candidate that fully meets the qualifications and experience required for the role will generally be paid at this level. An offer made to a candidate that is above the midpoint would represent someone who is extraordinarily qualified and/or the role requires being geographically placed in the Bay Area.
