Job Description
OVERVIEW
The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts has a belief that the arts can have an impact on the health and well-being of individuals and a community. The center has partnered with medical researchers, artists and healthcare organizations in support of medical studies evaluating the impact the arts (music, performance and movement) have on the health and well-being of stroke survivors, memory loss patients, individuals with autism and their caregivers.
The newly created role of Director, Arts & Wellness will lead visionary programming, evaluation and research at the intersections of arts and wellness. The Director will play an instrumental role in the development of sustainable and impactful arts & wellness programming at the Dr. Phillips Center.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Director, Arts & Wellness is responsible for aligning the Dr. Phillips Center vision of Arts for Every Life®to create programs and partnerships within our community that inspire meaningful impact on the wellness of others. The Director will research, develop, and implement initiatives that tie the arts to healthy living, wellness and preventative care.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop project partner agreements and contracts. Where necessary, create SOP’s to ensure clear and consistent program implementation. Ensure compliance with all participant facility guidelines (i.e. healthcare facilities, education centers, etc.).
  • Compile a directory of arts and wellness initiatives that exist in Central Florida. Synthesize findings and present results to key stakeholders.
  • Participate in department and arts center required meetings and trainings. Build an effective and collaborative work environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Develop ideas for programming and build programmatic outline as follows: facilitated at the Dr. Phillips Center, at community health partner venues and at other community venues. Explore and recommend potential partnerships. Recommend next steps and implementation plan. Create a multi-year project plan. Draft and present project scopes to key stakeholders.
  • Research models for the integration of arts and health/wellness by interviewing stakeholders and practitioners; holding conversations with community arts and healthcare organizations; conducting online research; reviewing medical studies (to include recent Dr. Phillips Center initiatives); and benchmarking with other arts organizations.
  • Recruit, hire, train, lead, supervise and evaluate the performance of staff members for the efficient operation of the department. Provide feedback on staff performance.
  • Build strong and positive relationships with healthcare partners, key community partners, educational institutions, arts organizations and others that can influence and effect the successful implementation of Arts & Wellness initiatives.
  • Maintain a professional and friendly relationship with other departments, colleagues, and partners.
  • Able to effectively communicate in English in both written and oral forms.
  • Develop hiring guidelines, job descriptions and contracts for Teaching Artists. Follow established Finance and People & Culture guidelines for the use of independent contractors.
  • Able to remain calm under pressure. Ability to work effectively with internal and external customers, some of whom will require high levels of patience, tact, and diplomacy. Maintain Dr. Phillips Center standards of customer service at all times.
  • Create evaluation plans and metrics to measure the impact of programs. Survey program participants for non-clinical feedback and program effectiveness (example: program participants, healthcare institutions, clinicians, Teaching Artists, etc.).
  • Develop a case statement and theory of change. Create a vision statement for the initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Programming and Education on programmatic initiatives. Partner with Development and Sponsorship on potential funders (grants, corporate and individual supporters). Leverage Marketing, Corporate Affairs and Communications to garner program and community support/participation.
  • Follow and support all operational policies and procedures. Assimilate into the arts center culture through understanding, supporting and demonstrating the core values.
  • Review internal health and wellness initiatives. Partner with People & Culture on initiatives for colleague impact.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
  • Ability to lead effective project management teams in achieving goals.
  • Familiarity with arts-based research and evaluation methods, arts in health research and evaluation. HIPAA and Human Research certified with experience in the IRB approval process.
  • Must have project management experience including research, project development, timeline development and budget creation. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience working with cross-sector partners including: arts industry, healthcare, community organizations, educational institutions, insurance providers and government.
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate the value of arts in health & well-being. Effective and persuasive presentation skills.
  • Strong computer proficiency skills, especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Must be able to work independently and have an entrepreneurial spirit.
  • 5+ years of experience in the field, managing programs and budgets.
  • Background in the arts is preferred. Candidates should have a passion for connecting arts and wellness.
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Prefer MA in Arts in Medicine, Education, Masters of Public Health or related field (or 6+ years of experience in the field of arts and health)
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • This position is located on-site at the Dr. Phillips Center.
  • Must be able to travel locally to meet with partners and stakeholders.
  • This position requires the ability to work a variable schedule, evenings, weekends, and holidays to meet operational needs.
